Mission: The des moines county humane society provides shelter and rescue operations for animals in des moines county, secures permanent, loving homes for abandoned, abused or neglected animals, and teaches responsible pet ownership and compassion for all living things.
Programs: The des moines county humane society operated the burlington animal shelter. During 2013, 1,327 animals received shelter services, and 462 animals were adopted. The shelter reunited 271 lost pets with their owners, and placed 63 microchips to aid in identification of lost pets. The humane society volunteers participated in over 22 community events, including bark in the park, cyn-a-palooza, the west burlington dog swim, the burlington farmers market, and horse and hound adoption events. Additionally, in 2013 the humane society moved into its newly remodeled and expanded facility, which boasts an expanded size, superior ventilation, feline interaction room, and a community room for informational seminars and meetings. The humane society implemented a pets and patriots program to waive adoption fees for military personnel, and works with the local homeless shelter and the iowa state penitentiary. Humane society volunteers bring animals into the community to special events, nursing homes, schools, and church groups.
