Mission: Degage Ministries was created with a mission "to reflect the love of Christ to the poor and dispossessed of the Heartside neighborhood in Grand Rapids by being a safe harbor where friendships are formed and community begins." Our community is ethnically diverse, and individuals within this community have varied and often acute needs. Nearly 65% have an income of $15,000 or less, and recent estimations suggest that over 50% of our population suffer some form of mental illness. Over 70% have disabilities of some kind. Degage Ministries is committed to developing quality programming and fostering relationships which reflect the love of Christ and offer dignity to each individual member of this community.
Programs: Our Coffeehouse Ministry offers the only safe evening alternative to the streets. Because we believe in the dignity of purchasing food, we also offer low-cost breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus where people pay a small fee for items made to order. Coffeehouse also distributes personal care items, blankets, etc.Life Enrichment Center offers hygiene services including showers, and a low-cost hair salon and laundromat. Locker rental is also available. Varied programming includes support groups, a referral service, mailing address, voicemail, a State ID service, a bike program, banking program and more!The Open Door is a drop-in center for women from 9:00 pm to 9:00 am Wednesday through Sunday. The Open Door is a safe haven, a respite, for women in crisis. Staff is available for counseling and referrals can be made for those seeking further support or treatment options.Food Pantry Cooperative offers an alternative to the traditional food pantry structure. It encourages the civic responsibility of volunteerism, the necessity of planning, and the dignity of choice. Members order food from the food bank, run the pantry, clean it when it closes and choose their own food.Degage Dollars offers an opportunity to work for vouchers, which can be applied toward for-fee services in our community center.
