This is Calle! (Now Chico) We found him while on vacation in PR a few months back. Five minutes into meeting him on the street we couldn't leave without him. We were pretty clueless on how to bring him home until we found Defensa, with their help and some leg work we were able to fly him back to Boston with us! Our friends Taylor and John took him in and he's now neutered and working on his manors while continuing to be a big energetic love bug! Here's a few pictures of his new life here in Boston :)
Defensa Animal de Rincon deserves high praise! While I have have never met the organizers in person, working with them remotely has shown to be a fulfilling experience. The passion they have for their mission is proven in their day to day actions. They continually look for ways to improve upon their already successful rescue and rehabilitation of the most vulnerable animals. I look forward to continuing doing my part with such innovative and compassionate people!

Amazing group who always goes above and beyond, jumping to action when they hear of any animal in distress
Review from Guidestar
I have been fostering animals through Defensa Animal de Rincon for almost three years now and they have always been easy to work with. They put the animal's needs first in every case and always approve payment for my foster's treatment, no matter how costly the treatment or how sick the animal (and there have been some amazing recoveries!). Every month, they release their financial statement online for the public to review and they are ethical and transparent in every way. The best part is that all of their funds go directly to the animals so there is no wasting money on overhead that could be going toward a needy animal.
About a year ago I was traveling in Puerto Rico and found a stray dog hiding under a trash can. I fell in love with him and wanted to help him, especially after learning about the terrible situation for dogs in PR. I wanted to bring him back to New York with me to find him a home but was finding it impossible to manage this. I reached out to Defensa and they helped me greatly with organizing his trip, getting him safely from the vet to the airport, everything. I could not have done this rescue without them. They do great work and deserve much more help!
The dog (Oscar) was adopted by my aunt and uncle and they are absolutely in love with him. You can see in the pics his transformation, which was all possible with help from defensa!
I fostered a dog that had a broken leg for months. He was very skinny and had bruses all over his body. A friend brought him from the metropolitan area to the west. From the very beginning Defensa Animal Rincón supported his rescue and fostering in one of the best veterinarian clinics in Mayagüez. After sending him to New York Bully Crew they covered all of Papi's needs and health issues including his leg amputation. The people of Defensa Animal Rincón are very involved in the rescues and healing of abandoned and mistreated animals all over the Island. This was my first experience as a foster home and it was a great experience thanks to Defensa Animal Rincón. Now I bring fostering to many dogs and cats and receive all the help that Defensa Animal Rincón gives to rescuers, fosters homes and the animal themselves.
Defensa is more than a non profit. They bring community members from all walks of life to support their purpose: helping distressed animals get the help they need
They are very good stewards of the funds they raise
All I have to said about Defensa Animal de Rincon is Thank You with your assistance we saved so many lives. You never refused to offer me help for my rescues. You work with the communities in Puerto Rico saving animals lives. God Bless
I have asked Defensa to cover the vet expenses of various dogs that were rescued and were severely abused, malnourished, with severe skin problems and with all kinds of serious health issues. Defensa has always paid the vet costs in those cases. This organization is very committed to the cats, dogs and horses not only in the Rincon area but provides help to animals all around the island. These are the pictures of some of the animals that I requested help from Defensa and they have covered their expenses. Two of them have been adopted, one flew to New York and is in a foster home and the other one still needs to get treatment for the heartworm in Puerto Rico but has already been accepted in a shelter in New York and will be flying there when the vet gives the clearance. These stories have happy endings thanks to the support provided by Defensa. Nerylú Figueroa
I rescued Luna from the school where I work. Somebody had thrown her away in a small box next to our school's garbage bin. Then I saw she had a small tumor and wasn't sure what to do. I contacted someone I knew had rescued several dogs and she told me about Defensa. They have helped with all of the veterinarian costs for Luna's healthcare. She has several health conditions at the same time (vaginal tumor, hookworms, heart worms, anemia, and a skin condition) and they have been extremely helpful. Luna has had 3 weeks of antibiotics and had to take 3 other medicines to help her get stronger to get a biopsy done on the vaginal tumor. After finally getting her hemoglobin to normal, the vet did the biopsy and determined that the best option would a type of chemotherapy to treat it. Luna still has a long recovery process ahead of her, but Defensa will be here to help every step of the way. We have been blessed by such an amazing nonprofit. I tell everyone I know how wonderful they have been to us!
