Mission: With more than 150,000 supporters, death penalty focus (dpf) is one of the world's largest organizations dedicated solely to ending capital punishment. For more than 26 years we have worked to raise public awareness, build coalitions, and educate policy makers about the death penalty and its alternatives. Because the end of capital punishment around the world depends on leadership by the united states, and because ending capital punishment in the us depends on leadership by california, 2016 was a year in which we began expanded on our efforts to engage with our core constituencies and attract new supporters.
Programs: Education & advocacy death penalty focus organizes year-round public education campaigns by providing expert speakers to community groups and to schools as part of its youth outreach program (yop); by publicizing the death penalty's flaws in the traditional media as well as digital awareness campaigns; and by conducting research and opinion polls. Dpf publishes and distributes a variety of publications and manages an interactive website, deathpenalty. Org, which in 2016 dpf finished overhauling and re-launched with a new, mobile-friendly format. Dpf's newsletter, "the focus," delivered to 160,000 subscribers, provides comprehensive information and analysis on the death penalty. Dpf also participates in international organizations opposing the death penalty and files amicus briefs in relevant court cases.
justice advocatesthe justice advocates program works with people who have been exonerated of crimes for which they were wrongfully convicted, helping them advocate for a better justice system by arranging for them to meet with legislators and journalists and to speak to schools, faith communities, and civic groups. In 2016, our justice advocates spoke to many media outlets and to students in schools across the state as a part of dpf's youth outreach program.
california crime victims for alternatives to the death penalty (ccv) ccv aids and empowers people affected by violent crime, including families and friends of murder victims, so that they can advocate for criminal justice reforms that better serve victims of crime. In 2016, ccv worked with victims' families around the state to share their stories in public education events and in the media.
law enforcement outreach (leo)leo works with hundreds of current and former law enforcement officers who question the death penalty system. It helps to bring real-world experience to the discussion around public safety and the death penalty. In 2016, leo members spoke at public education events and in the media about the problems they have seen with the administration of the death penalty.
