Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Arts & Culture, Arts Education, Dance, Performing Arts

Mission: The Dance Institute of Washington is committed to providing children and youth the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and artistically through the discipline of dance. To deliver on that commitment, DIW operates a studio school and free education outreach programs at local schools, affordable housing communities and youth organizations. Each of these programs uses dance education and performance to grant young people from diverse backgrounds a chance to experience the performing arts and to develop important skills needed for a successful future—in dance and beyond. DIW is dedicated to: 1) building self-esteem, discipline and the drive for excellence among at-risk youth; 2) involving parents, educators, professional artists and community members in the lives of DC's underserved children; 3) fostering mentoring relationships between professional artists and students; 4) broadening the horizons for the next generation of successful citizens.

This is my grandaughter's (age 4) first experience with dance and she loves it. She looks forward to her class each week. I plan to enroll her in future classes.

I worked with DIW from time to time and saw several great things and still do on the occassion that I visit DC. The staff really seems to care about their work and believe in the programs they offer. Many of the students seem motivated to dance professionally and/or go to college and study further.

I was a student of dance as a teenager. Now, as an adult studying, I have really enjoyed the offerings of DIW. The staff really seems to care and be interested in our continued development, even though I am purely dancing for my own enjoyment. They motivate me to work harder and I'm glad that they are here in the community.

I really appreciate the experience that the Dance Institute of Washington has allowed myself and my grand-daughter. It is very proffessional and exact but also gives the right amount of norishment for young people to believe in themselves. The instructors are excellent and talented. The envirionment is very warm and inviting. I would suggest to anyone that wants to give their child dance instruction of dance to visit this space. You will be very pleased. Gilda

I have been able to connect with the dance community in a way I was not aware I could. There is a very strong desire to consistently improve on the services to community. The staff is very warm and friendly. I believe the studio needs more exposure. Even though they are in a highly exposed and trafficked location, I think most people need to know that the services they offer are available to all and not just a select group of people. Their target really is the under-privileged.

As an intern with the Dance Institute of Washington, I was greeted with open arms. Not only were they able to use my skills and abilities to propel the organization to the next level, but also, they were willing to allow me to take dance classes in exchange for my work. There is a spirit of excellence throughout the organization and the staff really works hard to help make others' lives better. DIW represents the community very well by illuminating the area with such an amazing and well-constructed building. I appreciate all of the programs that DIW has implemented to help underserved youth in the area.

We started our daughter in the 4-5 year old class and she loves it! The teacher is warm and caring, as are all the adults we've encountered there. The check in/out process seems secure. It's a perfect intro movement class. Our daughter enjoys showing her new moves to us.

i have been with the Dance institute of washington for over a little bit of 3 years now. i came here having an objective just to complete my 3 years in ballet for college, but what i am leaving with is much more. i leave with not just outstanding technique taught by extrodinary teachers but also with a passion for ballet and other techniques that i have never taken as well as dance disciplen and muscle memory. not having that much experience starting off here was actually the best thing that could have brought me thus far because starting off from scratch and getting the proper technique is what was needed for me. i not only connected to my trainers` as teachers but i felt like they were apart of my growing experience and as my family. i really do appreciate everything that you have done for me and the only way to you show you that it was worth all the hard work is to invite you to a show when i make it!
