Mission: The Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County seeks to advance the arts sector in Greater Houston, thus contributing to enhance the region's quality of life, economic competitiveness and attractiveness as a tourism destination. Our mission is to nurture, fund and promote participation in the arts in Houston and Harris County.
Programs: Haa's grant program manages a competitive grants program; awarding over 222 grants totaling $3,914,279 through a peer review panel process which awards on key elements such as artistic/cultural merit, audience development & community outreach, cultural tourism impact, and the administrative and management ability of the organization.
the civic art + design program (civic art) responds to the opportunities and challenges to build the city's civic art canvas and maintain the treasures and legacies in the civic art collection. Haa works with the city staff to recommend the most appropriate locations for use of civic art monies. Haa manages the artist selection process and acts as project manager through commission completion of new works of art. Haa works on behalf of the city to manage conservation of artworks throughout the city, utilizing national standards in conservation and contracting professionally licensed conservators. Civic art serves as a community resource and works on a consulting basis, with both public and private sector entities.
the management assistance and services department provides year-round relevant programming that assists arts organizations and individual artists in being effective stewards of their resources. Haa also provides leadership through support in programs and services that help build & foster a vibrant creative community through such programs as business volunteers for the arts (bva), free night of theatre, arts database management program, and a management organization development enterprise(mode) program. This department also works with national arts marketing project, a program of the arts & business council of americans for the arts (afta), to help arts organizations operate in the marketplace.
