Mission: Formed in 1948, the mission of CP Nassau -- United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (ucpn) is to (a) affect positively the quality of life in persons with cerebral palsy, others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs, and the families of both, and (b) prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects. Currently, ucpn provides comprehensive full day, outpatient and family services for over 1,800 children and adults who have cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, mental retardation, epilepsy, speech delay and other developmental disabilities. We also manage residences throughout Nassau County that house and provide direct care in a group home setting. Additional information about the organization is available on our website: www.cpnassau.org. ucpn's programs extend to their families, friends and ucpn volunteers and supporters, which is a community in excess of 35,000 people. UCPN also is the largest employer for its community in Roosevelt, and provides primary care to those residents as well as Medicaid patients from all over Long Island.
Results: It is important to note that while the organization's name emphasizes cerebral palsy, only 38% of the participants have CP. UCPN has achieved recognition for its work with brain trauma and developmental disabilities as well as motor skills. All of us are at risk for a traumatic brain injury (TBI)at some time in our lives, especially from motor vehicle accidents and sports participation. An estimated 1.7 million TBI-related deaths, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits occur in the U.S. each year. Improved acute care and rehabilitation to reduce the likelihood of TBI-related disability, and also increased access to services for those who do not fully recover are critical to improving quality of life of persons following TBI.
Target demographics: those with cerebral palsy, TBI/head traumas and developmental disabilities
Direct beneficiaries per year: over 2,000 persons with head traumas, cerebral palsy and developmental disabilities.
Geographic areas served: Nassau County and metro New York City/Long Island
Programs: primary care, rehabilitation/therapeutic health center, a school (K-12) as well as group homes.
