Mission: Yaddo is among the United States' first and most acclaimed artists' communities. Founded in 1900 by financier Spencer Trask and his wife, Katrina, a poet and playwright, Yaddo launched its residency program in 1926. Yaddo's mission is to stimulate creativity and give talented artists the time, space, and support to develop new works by providing residencies at its 400-acre site in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Careful giving to this once great charity. Elaborate spending on administrative cost has led this autocratic management to lose its original mission. Top management is marginally qualified and highly compensated. Spending on salaries, housing and perks for the top tier leaves little for the creativity of the artist.
