Mission: The copper river watershed project promotes a salmon-rich, intact watershed to support culturally diverse communities by forming partnerships for watershed-scale planning and projects.
Programs: Fish habitat restoration: crwp works to restore degraded salmon spawning and rearing habitat by evaluating culverts within the watershed for their ability to allow fish passage to spawning habitat. The crwp also works to identify undocumented salmon habitat for nomination to the state's anadromous waters catalog, and to mitigate stormwater pollution.
invasive plant management: crwp is working to facilitate partnerships among public and private land managers and land owners in both the copper river basin and the copper river delta area to identify and treat invasive plants. Invasive plants are particularly aggressive and threaten fish and wildlife habitat by crowding out native plants, reducing foraging opportunities for native fish and wildlife.
community tourism planning: as part of our mission, we are working with local government and business partners to attract small scale independent travelers to the region to help build a sustainable tourism economy. The crwp also facilitates organizing the copper river wild salmon festival, a weekend event that draws visitors to cordova from anchorage and fairbanks.
