Mission: We are a unique ministry of the S.C. Midlands community created to serve as an instrument of God''s love by providing a coordinated charitable response to assist those in need.
Target demographics: low- and moderate-income households
Direct beneficiaries per year: 8,392 adults and children with services to meet basic needs for food, clothing, shelter, and health care. Over 3,600 taxpayers received free assistance to prepare their returns. Refurbished cars were given to 13 low-income wage earners to enable them to get to work and to connect with better job and educational opportunities.
Geographic areas served: Columbia, South Carolina and surrounding counties
Programs: The Community Auto Repository (CAR) receives donated vehicles that are refurbished or sold to provide transportation to work for low-income employed adults. CAR also offers low-cost auto repair and maintenance services to persons served by The Cooperative Ministry. Applicants to receive a car through the program pay a fee and attend financial education classes to develop a household budget that includes expenses of owning and maintaining a car. Crisis Assistance offers financial and in-kind assistance to meet basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing. For qualified applicants, the program also offers assistance to pay health insurance premiums, bus passes for rides to work or medical appointments, and vouchers to obtain state-issued identification documents. Financing Your Future offers financial education workshops and tax return preparation services aimed at helping participants acquire knowledge and skills for accumulating assets and building wealth.
