I had worked two jobs my entire adult life.

When I eventually retired, I had a hard time getting used to the idea of sitting around and doing NOTHING.

Rotary International has two Mottoes, one of which is: Service Above Self.

So, I thought to myself - What can I do as a Rotarian to be of Service to others, and to bring some order into my own life?

I was discussing this with my Son Rouben and he said that his dear friend, the late Dr. Joe Phillips, was heavily involved in the start up of Weatherford’s Food and Resource Center. He asked me to go and check them out. He said: I am sure that they can use your help somewhere!

I went to the WFRC Office the next day, and rest, as they say, is history.

My duties at the WFRC have to do with assisting the Clients with their food choices.

Helping people in need is unbelievably gratifying - from the First Timers who really do not know what to think of the Big Guy who is always cutting up with everybody, to the Old Timers who come in looking for me!

To say that it is a Win/Win situation is over-simplifying things and it really is not fair.

The personal satisfaction that I get from being a Volunteer and from helping people, can not be bought for any amount of money.

Plus the friendships that I have developed over the years with the Clients and my co-volunteers is something that can not be measured in any way other than the warm fuzzies that you feel on the inside.

WFRC is a wonderful Organization that fills a great need in our Community by providing a place where people in need can acquire good food at no cost to them.

Also, quite a few of our Volunteers are also Clients. Think about it. What a wonderful way to pay back by being of Service To Others!

Do I love helping out at the WFRC? You better believe it!

I like volunteering at WFRC because I enjoy visiting with clients and fellow volunteers. I began because I remember how tight money can be for a single teacher and daughter of a single teacher. But we were lucky because my grandparents always supported us with food, clothing and love when we needed it. So I started volunteering for that reason. But I have learned that I am getting so much more than I am giving! I love the life stories and new recipes the clients are giving me! My goal each Thursday is to get a smile out of everyone I help shop, and I wind up with a smile on my face, also.
