Mission: To empower youth to be healthy leaders through green exercise programs that enrich the mind, body, community & environment.
Results: Concrete Safaris, established in 2008, prepares youth in East Harlem and beyond to lead healthy lives and shape their environment through outdoor education, play, exploration, and community engagement. It is the only organization positioned in NYC Housing Authority developments specifically teaching youth and their neighbors to garden, cycle, promote health, and other outdoor pursuits multiple times per week year-round in response to interests identified by program participants.
Target demographics: youth transform the world starting in their own backyards
Geographic areas served: East Harlem
Programs: after school, internships, field trips to our gardens, and obstacle races on NYC streets.
Concrete Safaris is a wonderful organization committed to educating East Harlem youth about the importance of outdoor exercise and eating organic, locally sourced produce. Through growing their own fruits and vegetables in the Mad Fun Farm, Concrete Safaris creates an interactive, hands-on learning experience for its students. Having led corporate volunteer events at Concrete Safaris and other local organizations several times over the last couple of years, the Concrete Safaris events consistently have some of the highest volunteer satisfaction and retention rates (many people who do one Concrete Safaris event return to do others). I think this speaks to the caliber of the work Mac does and the importance of an organization like Concrete Safaris!
