Mission: Concern America is a globally-focused community development organization whose mission is to transform need into self-sufficiency, and with a vision of health care, clean water, education, and economic opportunity for every community worldwide. Building upon community members’ lived experiences and knowledge, for more than fifty years Concern America has directly engaged communities in health, sanitation, and income-generation projects by training community members to become their own health care providers, water system builders, teachers, and cooperative business members. With this support, people themselves save and sustain lives, and build community and civil society in remote, materially impoverished regions lacking these services.

Because this charity's star rating on Charity Navigator is low, some people may not consider it. But this is not a charity that should be written off! The rating is low because they are small and having difficulty raising donations, not because they are not doing effective and important work. They are spending all their donations supporting their mission, therefore have little cash reserves. I am very appreciative that all the leaders and employees work for low salaries--this is not a boondoggle supporting highly paid TV preachers. Most important, the work they do takes the right approach. Volunteers live in the communities, and teach their skills to local people who can then take their place doing the work. It creates skilled workers adding value to their own countries by doing work, not creating a welfare culture where the poor wait for handouts. Because this Charity is small, unlike the other Concern based in Ireland, which is supported by government funds and recently had turmoil concerning the huge salary its CEO makes, my dollars have a direct impact. I also like that before I decided to donate, I could call and ask pointed questions about expenses and salaries and get direct answers, and also emailed asking followup questions and got real answers, not just a form letter. I recommend this charity for consideration if you are interested in development in the 3rd world where people can get basic healthcare and clean water and take pride in supporting themselves.
