Mission: Comprehensive Development, Inc. (CDI) is dedicated to removing the barriers that prevent disadvantaged students from graduating from high school and leading successful lives. We’ve developed a model based on the successful founding partnership with Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School and a broad range of community partners that connect our students with transformative opportunities and resources. We have now expanded this model to form a network of three schools: Manhattan Comprehensive Night & Day High School, The High School for Health Professions and Human Services and City-As-School. CDI services include college and career advisement, free tutoring, legal, medical, case management and post-graduation services.
Results: CDI’s impact is significant. The students we serve exceed the average in GPA (26%), credits passed (15%) and first year college retention. And, despite the fact that many of our students came from far behind, they graduate from CUNY at higher rates than other CUNY students: of MC’s 146 students who entered CUNY in 2006, 45% have graduated, compared to CUNY’s overall 23% graduation rate.
Target demographics: disadvantaged New York City public high school students and alumns.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 3,500 NYC high school students and alumns.
Geographic areas served: New York City
Programs: Intensive college and career preparedness to engage students while in high school and prepare them for post graduate success. Students who receive CDI’s integrated academic and social services are more engaged in their own education and their futures, have higher attendance rates, earn more high school credits and achieve higher Regents passing rates than students who do not take part in our services. We support our students throughout their time in high school and beyond, by offering: College and career services that provide information and resources to students Support services that provide legal and housing assistance and case management Tutoring services that help students overcome academic obstacles that delay graduation Post graduation college and career services The Green Track Program that offers students academic and work experience in sustainability
