Mission: Companions for Heroes (C4H) provides companion dogs, and on a case-by-case basis, service dogs, obtained from shelters, rescues and humane societies, who might otherwise be euthanized, free of charge to active duty military personnel, military veterans, first responders, military spouses and children, and Gold Star Families recovering from the psychological challenges they suffered during service to our country. C4H increases public awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other challenges confronting our country’s heroes; and rally’s support for animal welfare and the adoption of shelter and/or rescue animals.
C4H is a non-clinical and non-facility based organization that places special emphasis on creating mutually beneficial opportunities for shelter and rescue animals, some who might otherwise be euthanized, and our nation’s service men and women by accessing the expertise of medical care professionals and animal welfare organizations. C4H is an Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) program that recognizes the incredible power of the human-animal relationship and seeks to support those suffering from psychological stress as they pursue recovery with the unconditional love of a dog.
Results: Over 1,400 Heroes and Dogs Served/Saved.
Target demographics: Our country's Veterans, regardless of era, first responders, gold star families, and military children.
Geographic areas served: U.S.
Programs: After an on-line application, once approved, our Heroes are assigned to a C4H Program and Training Director (PTD) to help them find the right rescue dog for their needs as either a service or companion dog. C4H PTDs guide the Heroes through the adoption process, striving to make sure that the personality and temperament of the dogs will closely match that of the Hero's to ensure the success of the adoption. Following the adoption, each Hero must keep the dog at home for a two week "settling in" time period. Simultaneously, the C4H PTD vets a trainer local to the Hero that can provide the training needs of the Hero and dog. The trainer sets up a time period to evaluate the dog and C4H reimburses the Hero for their shelter and/or rescue fees and provides contact for the new trainer to begin the training process agreed upon.
