Mission: The coalition strives to protect and improve the waters of nyc's croton watershed, a critical component of water supply for over half of nys. We are in alliance of individuals and groups who believe that safe, clean and affordable drinking water is a basic human right. The mission was expanded to include the protection and improvement of all nys watersheds in 2013. On october 18,2013 the name was changed from croton watershed clean water coalition, inc. Programs: The coalition has initiated various research studies in the croton watershed and toxicity tests on radioactivity leaching out of hyland landfill in angelika, ny into the gennessee river and also testing for radioactivity in sewage from the wellsville wastewater treatment plant in wellsville, ny.
the coalition has initiated efforts, on a regulatory level, to litigate with agencies to declare the whole east of hudson watershed as designated critical resource waters. This dedication gives streams, lakes, wetlands and reservoirs a significant added layer of protection. The coalition continues to oppose developments that could be harmful to water quality by actively participating in the state environmental quality review (seqr) process and, when necessary, taking developers to court.
the coalition has initiatd efforts to encourage the natural process of water purification derived from the croton watershed and all nys watersheds. These efforts include a web site to disseminate information on the harnessing and enhancement of environmental solutions to drinking water problems.
