Train & learn from the best traditional Shotokan karate instructors in California @ CKF ; where you will learn the ultimate goal of karate "Jinkaku kansei ni tsutomuru koto" Seek perfection of character from inside out. This is one of the five principles of dojo kun that we should do at all time even outside the dojo in our everyday life.

ISKF SANTA MONIC DOO outside classes underneath the 2 tents on 5th and Arizona have been amazing - the training itself is quite challenging - the team spirit is excellent - the quality of the instruction is equally excellent and the facility, being a tented area in an open air outdoor parking lot, is 100% safe. All Covid precautions are observed including on line registration requiring completion of in depth Covid risk questionnaire, in person temperature checks and hand sanitizer prior to each class as well as strict observance of 6 ft social distancing (each student trains in a 10 ft x 10 ft square) and all participants wear masks. I highly recommend this dojo, all of its instructors and members and its excellent team spirit!! 5 STARS w/o hesitation!!

When times are tough, you see the true measure of a person or organization. Time and time again, the CKF has gone above and beyond to ensure everyone can stay connected through Karate with little or no cost to them. From organizing training camps in the past, to setting up no cost Zoom classes, to securing a safe outdoor area in the midst of the pandemic. The CKF has always placed the student and the community as the top priority.

Community Karate Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1990. Its mission is to promote the study of traditional Japanese karate-do as a means of improving community health and fitness, and aiding society. The Foundation seeks to promote peace and goodwill through the development of positive character traits and physical fitness.

Prior to the pandemic, in-person regularly scheduled classes in traditional Shotokan karate, self-defense and other physical fitness techniques, as well as training for instructors, tournament competitors, judges, examiners, staff, and officials in local, national, and international karate competition events were offered. From time to time, the Foundation organizes competitions and special events designed to promote its mission.

The Foundation is dedicated to providing the many benefits of karate and its philosophy to all members of society including those who are handicapped, and regardless of their financial ability to pay.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Foundation, under the leadership of Chairman, Sensei James Field, an eighth degree black belt, has continued to offer multiple weekly online karate trainings. As an 81 year-old with over fifty years of traditional Shotokan karate training, he wholly believes in making the physical and mental benefits of karate available to as many as possible, regardless of ability to pay. During the challenges of the pandemic, the trainings are completely free of charge and entirely donation-based.

As a next step in supporting our community, while doing our part to slow the community spread of COVID-19, the Foundation has petitioned the use of outdoor fitness space from Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. Our volunteer assistant instructors and directors are excited to help spread the mental and physical health benefits of karate training. Please support our nonprofit mission!

I started taking karate classes when I graduated from college in 2013. At point I was looking for just a palce where I could work out and maybe make a few new friends. Today I would say that I have an extended karate family, and I always get a killer workout!

Sensei James Field, the CKF board, and it's many volunteers has spent an untold number of hours to continue to pass traditional Shotokan karate to members of the community, even during a worldwide pandemic. Staying connected while social distancing, training for mental and physical wellbeing, and ensuring the core lessons of karate are maintained is very important. I hope to see the CKF continue to flourish for many more years to come.
