Mission: Community Forward SF (Formerly CATS) helps those most in need get off the street, achieve stability and establish permanent housing by providing compassionate, culturally sensitive services. We provide a wide range of services to chronically homeless adults 18 and over including drop-in, emergency shelter, transitional housing, residential substance abuse treatment, permanent supportive housing and support services including transportation, food, janitorial service and medical respite workers to a medical respite program in partnership with dept. Of public health, who provided medical services.
Programs: Medical respite: medical respite is a collaboration between the san francisco department of public health (dph) and cats. Dps provides medical staff and other resources while cats provides the support staff for the project. The program serves homeless individuals exiting hospitals who have passed the acute stage of their illness, but still require medical and pshycho-social support. The goal is to both stabilize clients and then link them with services that will ultimately place them in an appropriate permanent setting. The sobering center is also a part of this project serving public inebriates by providing a safe place to sober up and then referring them to detox and substance abuse treatment programs. In addition, cats added some staff and new lease for medical respite expansion in the current year.
a womans place: the program is the only 24-hour shelter and transitional housing facility in san francisco for chronically homeless women with special needs due to mental disabilities, substance abuse, and hiv-related issues. In addition, there is provision of outpatient medi-cal mental health program.
coronado hotel: provision of permanent housing with support services to help them remain housed.

Community Forward SF has been great to volunteer with. They are kind, organized, open to ideas, and very collaborative. They are very active in the SF community and constantly working to amplify their voice. Everyone that I've talked to or messaged with here has been very pleasant to work with, and their passion for their community is palpable! I really enjoy getting to volunteer with their Development department and being able to see the impact of our work with marketing and social media.
I've had the privilege of working with many nonprofits in the SF Bay Area. Community Forward SF is a game changer in the sector seeing a need and filling it for women+, medical respite, substance use and elder support. It's hard to believe that there aren't more women only services like their women's center in SF!
They have improved year over year since I've had my eye on them in 2021. Keep up the good work CFSF!
I had the opportunity to visit the Golden Gate for Seniors program, and was impressed by the warm atmosphere. I hope to spend more time there as a volunteer.
CATS is the most comprehensive program working to end homeless for people in San Francisco. Their highly trained and culturally competent staff responds to San Francisco’s diverse needs; as do their treatment and housing locations specifically designed for women and seniors. CATS’ focus is on getting people off the street, stabilized and into permanent housing. By providing comprehensive and ongoing supportive services CATS breaks the cycle of homelessness.
