It’s hard to put into words just how beneficial this organization, CWVC has lifted me up and changed my life for the better. The trips and the people have so significantly improved my wellness through relationships built and through rekindling my spirit that was so broken down just a few years ago. I couldn’t possibly express my gratitude enough. These weeks learning to dive and be social have truly built me up and helped me find a part of myself that has been missing for too long. I’ll always be incredibly thankful for all the hard work that goes into making this organization function and these trips a reality.

Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge has made my life worth living again and I mean that so literally. I had nothing to look forward to before and didn't believe I'd ever be able to do such an amazing and active thing like scuba dive, sail, or even fly or travel out of state before this amazing organization came along. The incredible people and activities at CWVC have shown me that despite everything that broke my spirit and body, I can stand back up and be whole and strong again. I've made lifelong friends and memories and I'm rejuvenated. I feel like my disabilities don't define me as much and I have new positive memories to replace the awful ones. I'm so grateful for finding these incredible veterans and organization. Being around you guys gives me a sense of purpose and makes me want to do the work to be better. Thank you for making my life more joyful and for reminding me that I am so much more than what happened to me.

I have always wanted to learn how to dive and CWVC made that happen! Once I got in the water and learned how much it helps my mental state of mind I was hooked. Diving is the only place that I do not feel disabled. CWVC has invited me to dive with them a couple of times and each year it gets better and better. The staff and volunteers are always a huge support. This is a great non profit in all aspects. I've never left this challenge not counting down the days until the next year and hoping to get invited back.

I seriously can’t thank everyone enough for this trip! I needed it more than I realized living in Utah makes it hard to dive. So having the opportunity to participate in the CWVC was absolutely amazing. Diving is the only place I’ve ever found that I do t feel disabled. Being able to get involved with the reef restoration was such an added bonus!

As a combat wounded veteran with a traumatic brain injury, I had to face numerous challenges on my journey to recovery. However, one experience that truly changed my life was participating in the Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge (CWVC) and discovering the transformative power of scuba diving. In this review, I would like to share my personal journey and how scuba diving became a catalyst for healing, rejuvenation, and personal growth.

1. Discovering the Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge:
The Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge is an exceptional organization that aims to provide adaptive sports and recreational activities to wounded veterans. Through their programs, wounded veterans are given the opportunity to conquer physical and mental barriers, fostering camaraderie and promoting personal growth. It was through this organization that I was introduced to scuba diving.

2. Breaking Barriers and Embracing a New World:
Scuba diving presented a unique opportunity for me to escape the limitations of my physical and mental injuries. Underwater, my injuries became irrelevant, and I was free to explore a whole new world. The weightlessness, peace, and serenity I experienced underwater were unlike anything I had ever encountered before. It allowed me to challenge myself and push beyond my perceived limitations.

3. Healing and Rehabilitation:
Scuba diving served as a form of therapy for me, both physically and mentally. The controlled and rhythmic breathing required underwater helped alleviate my anxiety and provided a sense of calmness. Additionally, the buoyancy of the water relieved the physical strain on my body, allowing me to move more freely and rebuild my strength. The therapeutic benefits of scuba diving were paramount in my healing process.

4. Camaraderie and Support:
Participating in the Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge and engaging in scuba diving provided an invaluable sense of camaraderie and support. Interacting with fellow wounded veterans who shared similar experiences created an instant bond. The shared challenges and triumphs fostered a supportive community that understood and uplifted one another. Through CWVC, I found a network of individuals who became not just friends but family.

Participating in the Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge and embracing scuba diving as a wounded veteran with a traumatic brain injury was a life-altering experience for me. It allowed me to overcome physical and mental barriers, find solace and healing, and connect with an amazing community of fellow veterans. The transformative power of scuba diving cannot be understated, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities it has provided me. The Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge and scuba diving have truly changed my life, offering hope, strength, and a renewed sense of purpose.

I am posting here anonymously because I don’t want to alarm anyone. I’m not in that place anymore thanks to this organization. Before being invited to a past CWVC event, I was in a very dark place, I was in a rut that I could not get out of, and there was no end in sight, bad things just kept piling on and getting worse. I literally saw only one way out, and I was about to take it. I know it’s not the answer, and I’m not proud of myself for thinking that way, since I’m always mad when one of past teammates follows through. Again, I’m not there any more, so don’t worry about me. Although I was a bit shy and reclusive at first, this organization took me in and gave me a purpose. We all have common issues, and everyone is open and willing to talk through them. You see other reviews stating it's a family, it really is, but better! This family doesn’t pass judgement. Watching them get together and put together a wedding and celebration in under 24 hours was such an inspiration. The whole event this year was amazing and incredible to be a part of. Thanks to all that made the event possible, the sponsors, the staff, and the participants. It’s because of you, that I can get through the other 51 weeks in the year. Until next year! Oh, and whoever ordered the amazing weather for SCUBA diving, thank you too!

To tell my story at a point in my life I felt was a chore. But I realize that my story can help others. So here is my story.

August 5th 2004 while on a foot Patrol in Baghdad Iraq we had been attacked. I shoved a brother out of the way of the first grenade taking the blast. A second grenade landed a few feet away from me. The explosion shattered the left side of my skull. As my team leader pulled me to safety a third grenade was thrown. He pulled me out of the way of that grenade saving my life. While being carried a 4th grenade was thrown. My team leader shielded me from that blast saving my life yet again. I had to re-learn how to do everything all over again. I have had 6 Neurosurgeries.

This is my second year attending. The first year I had been told that I couldn't dive due to the severity of my TBI. So they sent me fishing. I had never been fishing on the ocean. But in doing that I made more opportunities for others who have a TBI as severe mine. The first year was a reunion between Andrew and Lisa Lourake. Because I have known Andrew and Lisa since I opened my eyes again. I do not know the exact date. But they walked in my room to help my mother and I when I returned from combat 20 years ago this August... But this year they surprised me. They got someone else who gave my mother hope. They reunited me with Jessica Clements. She is a strong woman who helped me when I couldn't help myself. She had arrived to WRAMC May of 2004 with similar injuries. She had 3 months of recovery. She was walking and talking. A journey that I just started.

CWVC has saved my life. The structure that is held is what some of us veterans miss and some need. The purpose that is given. I might not be able to dive but I am the reason fishing is apart of CWVC. Which gave Jessica the chance to come down and fish. Something that I think as someone living with a TBI we need.

CWVC is my family more now than ever. And I know it gets bigger every year. And I will keep saying it.

My name is No-Go and CWVC has given the GO to finally live again.

So you want me to tell my story on how CWVC helped me. Even though I was unable to Scuba Dive due to how sever my TBI is. I was welcomed in with open arms. I had shared my song with a few people at the Barracks one night. Then I realized that I hadn't been living the life that my team leader saved properly. I hadn't let my guard down for almost 20 years. That feeling intensified when I walked into Heroes Bar. A Veteran Owned bar. I was in a very dark place the past 20 years. This trip was the first step in the right direction. My journey of working on myself. Another reason why I will be coming back. Because I want to help others. As a soldier you are stuck with a battle buddy. You are supposed to square that battle buddy away. And if they have any burdens. You will happily carry them. But sadly that's not how it is on the outside. Outside meaning in the civilian world. But organizations like CWVC give you that back. That comradery that you had when you were in. That sense of purpose. Which in itself helps you with your mental health. I will return to help. I will be a wave in this world. I want to make more waves in others lives. Other Veterans lives. Because we are all we have.

Three years ago I was invited to join this organization. The simple fact of the matter is that this group gave me new purpose and meaning in life. I felt horribly lost and was just doing the bare minimum to make it through each day. Falling farther into depression it was getting harder for me to maintain taking care of my house and finding reasons to keep doing much of anything. After getting my open water scuba certification and clear goals set out in front of me I strove to be a useful member of the organization. The combat wounded Veterans challenge brought me peace and meaning in my life. The group and the comradery is amazing, it really feels like family. I can only hope that this organization is able to help more veterans as much as it has helped me.

This year makes the third event I have been invited to with Combat Wounded Veterans Challenge. This organization has changed my life for the better. It has allowed me to find the ability to talk with people who have walked in my boots. This group is amazing in that they accept and understand without question. The group welcomes warriors in and makes them feel like they belong. A comment was made to me that I am no longer the same person I was three years ago. I owe this change to this organization, for without them I would have been lost. Thanks is an understatement for the appreciation I have for this amazing group.

Participating in the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge was a life-changing experience for me and my family. As a retired Marine Sergeant wounded in Iraq and a double amputee, I've faced countless challenges, but this event truly surpassed all expectations.

The opportunity to go scuba diving in Key West was not just about exploring the underwater world—it was about reclaiming a sense of freedom and adventure that I thought I had lost. The team at Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge made sure every detail was perfect, from the accessible facilities to the expert guidance during our dives. They understood the unique needs of veterans like myself and went above and beyond to ensure we felt supported and empowered throughout the experience.

One of the most touching moments was witnessing my son get certified to dive alongside me. Seeing him conquer the same waters and share in the exhilaration of diving was a profound testament to the bonds we forged during this journey. It was a reminder that despite the challenges I've faced, I can still inspire and empower those around me, especially my own family.

The camaraderie among fellow veterans during the challenge was inspiring. We shared stories, offered support, and forged connections that will last a lifetime. It was incredibly meaningful to be surrounded by others who understand the unique journey of recovery and resilience.

I am deeply grateful to Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge for providing this opportunity. They not only gave me a chance to rediscover my strength and capabilities but also allowed my family to participate in my healing process. This experience has reaffirmed my belief in the power of community and the resilience of the human spirit.

Thank you, Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge, for helping me redefine what is possible and for honoring the sacrifices of veterans like myself. I will carry the memories of this challenge with me always, as a symbol of hope and a testament to the unwavering spirit of those who serve.

I was brought in to this org by a close friend and longtime member and volunteer. He encapsulated this group so well and inspired me to get involved as much as possible. This group like many other veteran orgs out there does a lot right, with the best intentions possible, but they go a little further in their efforts. Family gatherings, prosthetic research, even fishing trips for those who cant scuba dive but still want to be included. A week long of heavy lifting and tiring but ever so rewarding work helps detract from everyday stressors and worry. The family element has increased my quality of life ten fold.

I participated in my first Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge in July 2023. It it was a fantastic and impactful experience for me. I was wounded in Iraq in 2005 and participated in outdoor recreation activities in the years after. It had been sometime since I had participated in an event like CWVC, maybe 15 years. I had also been an avid scuba diver prior to being wounded and gave it up as I thought I couldn't do it anymore. After choosing to participate in the CWVC I learned quickly that I could dive again and they supported me through the whole process. This helped me regain some of the confidence I had lost when I was wounded. I also found the prosthetic research personally impactful as I was able to test out a diving-specific prosthetic that improved my experience and performance. Most of all I found a new family of fellow wounded/injured veterans in which we provide mutual support. Camaraderie and community can be hard to find after you leave the military, especially being wounded and CWVC provided me with this. I am excited to do more with CWVC and encourage more wounded veterans to participate.

CWVC has been an excellent collaborator and partner within the discipline of prosthetic lower extremity ergonomics and novel SCUBA case studies. I am a researcher with the University of Hartford and the partnership with CWVC has allowed for the expansion of the body of the knowledge in sub surface swimming with lower extremity limb difference. I am very appreciative for the time and effort CWVC provides for recruitment and logistics for field research to occur.

I have not been scuba diving in almost 7 years and the combat wounded veteran challenge scuba trip threw me right back into scuba at full speed. This was such an amazing trip where not only did I get back on the bike so to speak, I felt like I didn’t miss a beat as far as diving goes. There were so many divemasters and I structure it was impossible not to feel comfortable during each dove. I also met some of the greatest heroes on the planet and got to share the experience with them. All I can say is as busy and tired as I was, I sure hope to get that opportunity again in my lifetime. Can’t thank everyone enough for putting all that together as I’m sure it was a logistical nightmare but it went absolutely flawlessly.

When my service connected injury suddenly became debilitating just before Covid, I felt isolated & overwhelmed, no longer able to use my usual physical activities for mental coping. This remarkable organization, focused on both research and veteran camaraderie, changed my life. I was able to participate in both the sailing and scuba challenges, learning new skills, being pushed to the limit mentally & physically, all while being encouraged & supported by my new band of veteran sisters & brothers.

I love this organization so much! Every event feels like a family reunion. They patiently helped me overcome so many obstacles to getting certified for scuba and I actually ended up loving the activity. I've met so many new friends and I know that they work hard to create a safe space for veterans to try new activities, learn, and grow without fear of judgement or criticism. Doing a dive with the scubanauts was the highlight of my year as was participating with Mote Marine Labs in coral restoration projects. This will completely change the trajectory of my higher education now that I can dive and participate in these activities.

Combat Wounded Veteran's Challenge is one of the best organizations that I've ever participated with. The entire organization understands the full range of challenges facing veterans, and that the challenges can appear or worsen years after their separation from the military. After 4 events with this group, they have become a sort of chosen family that I miss dearly whenever we must part ways. The challenges not only inspire a sense of mission for veterans to accomplish something greater than themselves, but it reminds us that we are all happier in team. I've participated in many adaptive sports programs for physical rehab, but CWVC is more than that. It's a community, it's an adventure, it's always a great experience, but it's a community and a support network of the best people that I've ever found. CWVC has made such a gigantic impact in my life that I applied and got into a Master's Program to remain involved in things such as the coral restoration project. I have friendships that will weather the test of time, and overall after fighting not 1 but 2 life threatening illnesses- I have many reasons to survive. In the 2022 scuba challenge, I had to finally face down my severe claustrophobia that caused issues all through my military service. While it is still with me, the Training with CWVC insured that I was stronger than that fear. Plus instead of forcing someone to overcome fear with more fear, they taught me to overcome it with joy, passion, and participation so that finally, I could be a part of something as amazing as a coral restoration project with all of the people that I love most.

Covid time really took a toll on me and a lot of my fellow Veterans friends. This was a much needed trip to distress and really get my mental state cleansed. It’s always great to not only enjoy my time with Scuba diving and the therapeutic camaraderie shared between us vets. It becomes even more fulfilling when you know you’re also helping a cause. Between restoring the reefs, doing the amputee studies which help provide much needed important medical data; to meeting and assisting the young Auqua-nauts. I couldn’t have had a more rewarding overall trip. I couldn’t be more blessed to have the support of organizations like this one!

Unquestionably the most impressive organization that I have had the privilege to be a part of.

CWVC is dedicated to facilitating the restoration of comradery, purpose, and self-esteem of our nation's wounded veterans. Through the facilitation of SCUBA, wounded vets are able to dive safely and enjoy the restorative properties of an underwater experience. Each vet is paired with a team of other divers and a dive master to ensure that their needs are met both on the surface and underwater. Teams are changed and altered based on the performance of the vet and feedback from the vet and the dive master. Teams are also modified to ensure the opportunity to dive with other vets, allowing for the building of strong connections between the attendees and the participants.

In addition to teaching and refreshing SCUBA skills, the organization partners with Mote Marine to help ex-plant various types of coral giving us purpose and enabling us to help the environment. CWVC also works with Scubanauts International, allowing us to work with, and mentor, young men and women. We are teamed with them to work on underwater navigation skills, as well as participate in an underwater navigation challenge that pushes divers' skills and trust while reinforcing teamwork.

As both a disabled vet, and the wife of a combat-wounded soldier, it is evident how much this organization cares about its participants and their families. Having a team to help my husband while we were diving was a blessing to both of us. I often spend so much time worrying and checking his gear that I often overlook something of my own. It was nice knowing that he was in good hands and having someone to double-check me as well.

And of course, it is always nice to connect with the vets and their wives/husbands and kids. This year, there were lots of other women vets in the program which was especially nice to see!

The SCUBA Challenge was my first event with CWVC but it certainly won't be my last. The staff is amazing and I am so thankful for them and the donors that make this happen for wounded veterans and their families. It took me 13 years to participate in a veterans program and I am so thankful to be part of a community that completely understands me and instant bonds you can make with those who have served.

I want to personally thank Andrew for all the behind the scene work to make this happen. Every detail of the week was meticulously planned.

Can't wait to participate again and hang out with the awesome veterans I met.

This was my first time participating in a challenge with the CWVC and it was amazing! We were greeted with open arms and it just got better from there. We were able to challenge ourselves and each other as well motivate and inspire each other to keep on pushing. My dive skills were drastically improved throughout the course of the week and especially during the research portion of the challenge. I left the challenge with a renewed passion for diving, a group of new friends, and a new dive buddy because my daughter now has her open water scuba certification! Being a part of another challenge has been such a blessing. Being around other veterans who accept me as I am is validation that means so much. The organization takes care of every little need we could possibly have so we don't have to worry about anything except to be in the moment.
This year I had the opportunity to be helpful which made me feel like I matter. I am so grateful for that feeling because it is a reminder of what I have to look forward to.
I get to live with the pride and joy of the experience and I have come home with an entire community of people who have my back.
The leadership is made up of people who will move mountains for a veteran in need. They work so hard to make it all come together. I can't thank you all enough.

I have attended several CWVC events with my Veteran partner. Each event is well run and the staff and volunteers treat the participants with care and respect. The Organization thinks of and takes care of everything for the participants! It's so great to be able to be a part of an event like this with other Veterans and their families. We recently attended the Key West Scuba Challenge and had an amazing experience! My Veteran was able to dive several days with the support of compassionate volunteers, dive pros, and medical staff that address each divers individual health and safety needs. They were able to partner with the Mote Marine Labs and plant coral and compete in a Navigation challenge with the SCUBnauts! As a non diver, I was able to ride on the boat and enjoy the camaraderie, snorkel, and watch the divers. We were able to connect with old friends and meet new ones. This was a wonderful week thanks to CWVC!

Our experiences with CWVC have been amazing. The staff, volunteers, and participants welcome you into the fold like family. They have highly skilled staff and volunteers, even to include top notch medical care. The research work that they do is so important in furthering the recreational opportunities available for our disabled veterans. CWVC truly cares for each veteran and family member that they work with. They work with each veteran ensuring that their individual needs are met with care. As a veteran spouse, they make me feel just as important as my veteran. The activities we are able to experience together are fun, challenging, and help to bring us even closer together as a couple. Absolutely amazing experience with CMVC, where the core effort was to have fun, learn and keep safe while enjoying the beautiful ocean waters of St Petersburg, Florida. We filled our sails with wind, our photo bank with beautiful memories, and our pain/anxiety with laughter and seamanship. I was in a routine of solitude within the confines of my home, avoiding crowds and reducing the chances of becoming angry/anxious or even disappointed. That all changed when a fellow disabled veteran-buddy called with an invite to be a part of a sailing clinic with other fellow warriors...how can i turn away and not take a risk? I was so glad that i chose to go, and the journey was so worth it in the end. I arrived on the first day with a simple goal: make the best of this great opportunity that i would not have had without CWVC. That goal turned into a week of sailing with great people, sharing and caring for one another. In the end, i was so pumped up with a new respect for those dedicated to giving back to the veteran community without any strings attached. My heart goes out to those veterans still making the good fight (hang in there, and take one day at a time), and my thanks goes out to the professional coaching staff and background volunteers that make dreams come true. God Bless you all, and God Bless our great country.

I have been honored to work with this amazing organization since 2019. I know how challenging it is to plan and execute dive trips and the staff of CWVC makes sure that every detail and contingency are covered. Providing volunteer dive professionals to guide the certified divers in very small groups is just one of the ways that CWVC ensures that safety is paramount. They also have activities for the family members that are non-divers to ensure everyone that attends their event has a great time. It is great to see wounded service members connect with new people or reconnect with old friends during these trips. The instant feeling of comradery is apparent with a large group of individuals that are going through similar situations and their families are dealing with similar struggles and can learn about resources from each other. I look forward to working with CWVC on their Scuba Challenge every year!

I was blessed to be invited as a participant in 2017 and was blown away by how much CWVC cares about veterans and their families. They are hands down the best veteran non-profit I have ever been apart of, and have been invited back year after year. The mentorship and opportunities to get involved as a volunteer literally changed my life, and helped me with professional development skills to get back to working in ways that I love. I went from isolation to getting back in service, and that says a lot. It’s comforting to know that you aren’t alone and experience common ground with other wounded veterans AND their families who are often over looked in some non-profit organizations. I look forward to and plan my year around the challenges. The friends and mentors I have made via this organization understand the value of community & connection and feel more like family to me than friends. I have had the amazing opportunity to work with the staff, volunteers and veterans a few times over the past 10 years. Working with both connected non-profits, SCUBAnauts International and CWVC. There are countless veterans programs out there that assist our military service members with the challenges we face while serving our country. What sets CWVC apart is unlike any other program I have served with. First would be the setting, to be able to feel conformable and safe on a military installation in a dream location like Key West, sets the scene for the event. From there CWVC gets everyone situated in lodging and transportation and everyone can communicate their needs and get updates through an app. Because of the amazing sponsors of this event, everyone gets an opportunity to dive or snorkel in the best coral reef diving in the continental US. In addition to that, local food venues offer us opportunities to mingle and share stories with each other, while enjoying the local cuisine. The reason this is so important is because of the immense amount of healing that happens from PTSD, TBI, and many other wounds that veterans suffer from. Not only is there healing, but there is also life purpose brought to each person attending. This purpose comes from serving the world by protecting disappearing coral reefs and conducting prosthetic research. Because of all of these things there is no other veteran program that offers what CWVC does!!

My family and I have been coming to the CWVC dive trips on and off for the last week 9years and there are not enough words to describe how much it has benefited my whole family. From my husband who was injured, my kids who practically grew up with everyone and have life long friends, and to me a place to lay down my burdens for a week and recharge with not only my family but the most generous and wonderful people I get to call friends. This trip is our family vacation every year. Saying Thank you doesn’t seem like enough but for my family it means the world. Thank you.

According to the National Academy of Sciences (2020),
“A considerable number of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), with about one in five experiencing a mild form of TBI commonly known as a concussion. Other common problems include posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, problematic alcohol use, and thoughts of suicide. Many veterans suffer from more than one health condition.
In addition, many women and men experienced sexual trauma, including harassment and assaults, while in the military. That can have both mental and physical effects”.
I start with these peer-reviewed facts to point out that most wounded and injured military veterans deal with social issues like isolation stemming from lacking things in common with friends and strangers that do not comprehend the experiences these veterans have and continue to experience, especially now that society is more distracted by other social and political priorities. Wounded and injured veterans just do not seem to be a priority anymore in getting attention and funding for veteran assistance programs. This is also true of veterans with other injuries, like amputees, spinal cord injuries, and more.
There are still some organizations, like Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge (CWVC), that continue the efforts with fellowship and research to help veterans like me reduce my feelings of isolation. The CWVC helps me to meet other veterans that are working through some of the same physical and mental disabilities by rehabilitating my intrinsic military need to stay in shape, the need to feel a sense of teamwork, and most importantly, feel appreciated. I have made lifelong friends of the CWVC staff, coaches, researchers, medical/technical professionals, and participating veterans that have taken up the sport of SCUBA diving as a serious sport to pursue. After all, military people tend to take everything seriously, and that is why we hope to return to CWVC many times.
As times change, society is distracted, and public donations and funding decline as wars end, funding for an organization like Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge is more important now than before to help wounded and injured veterans like me to socialize and not feel forgotten.

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the donors, staff and volunteers at CWVC. The partnership with underwater researchers to advance prosthetics and learn more about spinal cord injuries is a game changer. Being able to learn little tips and tricks to diving with a prosthetic from other amputees was invaluable. The camaraderie and friendships built during the Scuba challenge are memories I’ll keep with me for the rest of my life. The inclusion of spouses and families are something you don’t get at alot of other organizations so it was great to see the families involved and how much joy it brought them to see their veteran overcome challenges and succeed. I can personally say that CWVC has changed my life for the better and opened up a whole new world underwater for me to explore!

This is my second year attending CWVC, what an amazing week. This organization has been tracking individuals with numerous types of injuries and is ready to send clinical data and briefings to higher levels. I myself had high anxiety due to TBI and PTSD, more specifically with things touching or restricting my airways due to a helicopter crash. I had several DiveMasters, as well as doctors and staff to help me with my disabilities, at every step. They are doing this to help current and future veterans with disabilities get back to a normal life. The connection I have made with the staff, other participants and more importantly my wife and family has been overwhelming. I was accepted into a group and they have become family. The strong bond we share in the military has been lost in civilian life, and this has reinvigorated my purpose to myself and now to others that have been struggling for years. We have shared birthdays, Alive Days, anniversaries and wedding proposals. This program and camaraderie have personally and emotionally helped me in my recovery and helped maintain and re-establish my family relationships. Other veterans in this program have said it has saved their lives. The peace and solitude underwater has given me a new outlook on my life and has instilled a new pride with my fellow veterans of all services. When I was injured, and more recently when I retired I lost the feelings and sense of belonging to something that was bigger than myself. I have looked forward to this event, since my attendance last year. To me it is like a reunion, a sense of belonging, to me it is like being back in the military, just for a week. It fills my tank for a full year. We inquire about people who may be missing from previous years, we organize dinners and plans outside this weeks activities, we share in each others personal lives. This organization continues to follow each of us even after the event is over, they include families and encourage the growth in each of those relationships, and more importantly include the family in the healing process, as they have gone through their own emotional roller coaster with their veteran. I look forward to each year that I am accepted back to this great organization to help continue my journey forward with renewed enthusiasm.

I just had the honor and privilege of offering my photographic services to an amazing organization. I love everything that CWVC stands for and all the folks involved. Their scientists are innovative thinkers working creatively to come up with ways that will enrich the lives of these wounded soldiers. Being in the presence of such passionate patriots for a week left me feeling humbled yet inspired.

In 2018 I was linked up with CWVC through the Semper Fi Fund. My case manager asked me if there was anything I wanted to get involved with for recreation activities. Scuba had always appealed to me before having a spinal cord injury. Now it seemed even more prevalent to have the sensation of no boundaries underwater. Scuba school in Key West is a place of hallowed ground in my former career field. Where the tears of many failed candidates helped to fill the pool. It seemed fitting that I would also learn to scuba there as a paraplegic.
I stated early my desire to be an independent diver without the need for my chair underwater. CWVC was happy to facilitate. We began the discovery process of seeing what works. Like a metaphor for my life after a spinal cord injury, finding what works and living in a world that is not made for someone in a wheelchair is the closest to living in another world without leaving this one. Navigating the obstacles of how my body floats, where my legs go without motor control from me, and all the other basic scuba skills, made for a busy week. As exhausting as it was I left feeling a sense of freedom I had not experienced before my accident and becoming paralyzed. Suddenly I was able to move about in a 3D space without the need for a wheelchair. The best part was there were no obstacles. No steps, curbs, ramps to find only a renewed sense of freedom, discovery, and curiosity. My body was not succumbing to being in the sitting posture all day. I could stretch out and feel weightless underwater with a new sense of independence and freedom.
As I came back home I continued to hone my new scuba skills. With a local organization, we began to test the things learned from CWVC and help other local divers who are also disabled. Scuba has provided me with new skills that have so many facets to experience, explore and master. Documenting and sharing these underwater experiences with others has become something of interest to me. I am looking to grow these skills along with my other underwater skills as the years go on.
Each year I return to CWVC it truly feels like a scuba family. We have some great experiences above and below water in one of the coolest places in the USA! What sets CWVC apart from other nonprofits providing these wonderful experiences is the research component. The knowledge gained from working with amputees and spinal cord injury patients that can flow back into the respective populations is paramount. No other nonprofits or research organizations are doing this type of research to create prosthetics and adaptive devices for underwater use. CWVC has many years of questions and problems to solve in the quest to help disabled divers hone their craft underwater and enjoy a sense of freedom not found anywhere else. For someone who has had their basic freedom of maneuver restricted, words cannot describe the mental and physical freedom I have experienced through scuba. Instead, I challenge you to try it for yourself to gain an understanding.

I was asked a few years back to participate at one of their diving events. As an above knee amp I was excited to be in the research segment of the trip, always hoping to contribute for the development of better equipment to make swimming easier. The entire experience was fantastic. From the moment my wife and I were picked up at the airport, the entire staff made us feel at ease about the experience to come. The entire week was filled with camaraderie and the conquering of diving experiences I didn't think possible. The staff and other participants all were there working as a team to help everyone succeed. CWVC is a first class, fantastic organization doing some amazing things.

Last summer I was asked by my good friend Richard Winning if I could offer up my boat to support the SCUBA Challenge in the Keys. After spending a week on the water with these folks I returned home with a renewed sense of what small dedicated grass roots groups can do to make a difference in the lives of veterans and their families. As a Navy Veteran who sacrificed nothing, I'm amazed at what these men and women have given for our freedom and how they continue to march forward despite the challenges in their post-military lives. Climbing Mountains, Sailing & Scuba Diving are not easy without legs, but the prosthetic research is making a difference. Thanks to the CWVC for all you do.
See you next year!

As a volunteer for just over three years, I have been lucky to be closely involved in the mission of CWVC, and the work and purpose is genuine, has real purpose beyond the scope of the Veterans that participate, and will make long term differences in prosthetics, traumatic brain injuries, and post traumatic stress research. This gives participants inclusion, purpose, and a drive to continue working with Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge. It is good to be up for a challenge again!

I've participated in one CWVC event, and it was awesome! Along with three other vets and a couple of their spouses, we were able to join in an event that we would otherwiuse never have been able to do. We were well received, appreciated, and even recognized for our participation. The CWVC organization is professional and seeks to provide opportunities for veterans who could never accomplish these activities on their own. I wish I could join in on more Challenges, but every Vet served must have a chance as well. The people who run this organization are great!

Unquestionably the most impressive organization dedicated to facilitating the restoration of physical, emotional, and self esteem of our nations wounded veterans. Unique in the physical and mental challenges individually crafted to restore the individual confidence and capacity to reintegrate into life and family. The tireless and selfless staff totally take volunteerism to a never seen level in support given to our veterans where the near total financial resources go to the mission of helping and improving the lives of wounded veterans and their families.

As a Combat Wounded Veteran there are many obstacles in "Daily Life". Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge has taught me that no matter what my limitations are, I can accomplish anything. When I attended the Divers Challenge I was shown that no matter what I think, anything is possible as long as I TRY. As a "Certified" Scuba Diver, I was given the opportunity to partake in a program that gives Warriors the option to either Go Forward or Give Up and, the Staff will not let you Give Up on them let alone yourself. It was an AWESOME experience attending this event in Key West Florida and meeting other Wounded Warriors that face the same daily struggles and have overcome the obstacles that make some people give up. Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge gives you the opportunity to interact with men and woman who have the same Life Experiences as you do and also who can learn from your past struggles. The Staff and Volunteers treated me like family from the time I landed to the time I departed and continue to do so to this date. The experience and friendships are lifelong and outstanding.

I have been involved with this classy, motivational, and one-of-a-kind group for over two years. There is NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING like it. They organize and plan monumental expeditions for wounded veterans to open the door on life again. The bond that I see established between these men and women is priceless. But on top of all that, they combine these moments with research on prosthetics and TBI's by inviting clinicians in the field to join in. As far as I know there is no one out there doing anything like this. From scuba diving in the keys and climbing the biggest mountains in the world to just that simple handshake with a wounded Veteran, this organization will give you those good-cold chills down your spine.

I tell everyone I can about this group because it has changed so many veterans views on "life after war". So many of them think that they wont be able to do something say after losing a limb. This group puts together a team so that the goal "is" accomplished. These guys leave positive and with a new outlook. Just recently for instance, several amputees were trained to scuba dive in Key West. This was quite a struggle for a few of them. Just a few days later they are 7 miles offshore and 60ft underwater planting coral like they have been diving for years. The CWVC provided the support that the Vets needed to crush their individual obstacles and ALL succeeded!

If you can volunteer..DO IT!
If you can join in as a Veteran...DO IT!
If you think you can't do it...DO IT!

CWVC is truly an exceptional organization that takes challenges and recovery to a higher level. The challenges automatically form a bond that lasts well beyond the week or two of the event on hand. Having participated with the CWVC, I've expanded my knowledge and horizon for my future to come. Absolutely grateful for this group to of formed together and for what they're doing in the bigger picture for us.

Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge is such an colossal crew of military, government, education, business, etc. people who genuinely care for our hard work and dedication to defend our country's Constitution, rights, and freedom. So, in exchange for our hard work, they have put together a vast array of outdoor activities and events that get us veterans together to enjoy each others company and work together as we explore and take part in what ever challenge they put before us. What fun, lively, and amusing memories and pictures I have. Go ahead, add something like this to your world and see what comes of it...

Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge is an exceptional nonprofit organization that has done incredible things for me, my family and other combat wounded veterans. They have provided me with opportunities enabling and encouraging me to stay active and healthy while integrating with fellow combat wounded veterans. Their challenges promote teamwork and rehabilitation and test me physically and mentally to the fullest potential of my abilities. CWVC has enabled me to remain active and involved instead of sheltered and depressed. They also raise awareness and funding for the research and rehabilitation of Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injuries that many of our combat wounded are suffering with. I am duly impressed with their low operating costs and success in using the majority of their funding directly towards impacting the lives of their participants through their research and programs. There aren't any executives making six figure salaries in this organization. Thank you CWVC for all you have done and continue to do for our combat wounded warriors.
