Mission: To cultivate a healthy, equitable food system in the greater colorado springs community.
Programs: Colorado springs food rescue (csfr) volunteers sustainably recover food seven days a week from donor businesses around the pikes peak region and deliver it directly to local nonprofit partnership programs. Each month we recover an average of 30,000 pounds of fresh produce, prepared foods such as catered leftovers, and perishable food. This is the niche we fill; larger food recovery programs that collect donations in warehouses before redistribution cannot rescue this type of soon-to-expire food.
no-cost grocery programs: of our 25+ recipient sites, 9 are community-led grocery programs established and supported by csfr in high-priority areas. Each week, these programs distribute an average of over 2,000 lb. S of healthy food to over 500 families.
full circle food team (fcft): the fcft is grounded in an internship & project-based employment program at atlas preparatory school, in which 92% of students are on free/reduced lunch. Each semester, 6 students receive class credit to participate in a weekly csfr-led food system education module, manage a no-cost grocery program that serves over 6,000 unduplicated people, and complete a final project. In addition to this, we have facilitated youth-driven cafeteria/school garden food rescue programs at sierra high school, foothills elementary, stratton meadows elementary school, challenger middle school, gen. William palmer high school. These programs have changed the daily waste-stream behaviors of thousands of students and have led to over 5,000 lb. S of rescued food.
