Mission: The mission of the colorado neurological institute is to enhance the delivery of personalized, comprehensive and state-of-the-art care to individuals with neurological conditions through coordinated research, patient services, and education.
Programs: The research division of cni assists cni physician and research associates with the creation of protocols, the negotiation of clinical trial agreements, the overall operations and compliance associated with each study, and the enrolling and follow up visits with the patient subjects. In 2016 cni research staff facilitated an average of: of 6 stroke studies, 9 neurosurgical & brain tumor studies, 3 ms studies, 6 hearing studies, 5 head pain and migraine studies, 1 msa study, 2 epilepsy studies, 2 als studies and one humanitarian use device (hud).
the patient service division of cni is mostly comprised of the cni neurohealth center, which conducts numerous patient-focused activities, including: physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling, care coordination/navigation, cognitive driving assessments, support groups and monthly clinics in the areas of als, huntington's disease and spasticity. In addition, a new clinic was originated in 2015 entitled "supportive services clinic. " this monthly clinic was designed to meet the needs of neurological patients and their caregivers who are no longer responding to medications, but who may still have a long time to live. In 2016, the neurohealth center had a total of 5,490 patient visits. 2,535 were physical therapy visits, 1,004 were occupational therapy, 1,297 speech therapy, 654 counseling/care coordination visits. 9 cochlear implants and 2 baha devices were given away through the cni "cochlear implant assistance program," including all coordination of surgeons, operating rooms, and after-care. Cni staff assisted in approximately 12 epilepsy surgical procedures, 20 brain tumor surgical procedures, and 70 movement disorders (dbs) procedures. Cni also conducted a mission trip to guadalajara, mexico, where 82 donated hearing aids were fitted and 26 surgeries were conducted, including one donated cochlear device. Lastly, cni held two cochlear family camps, with 60 families in attendance during the summer of 2016. A total of approximately 265 total people were touched by this service, coming from all 50 states and 4 foreign countries.
the educational division at cni has been growing steadily and includes both patient-focused education and some professional education for physicians and service providers. Across 2016, approximately 500 patients were seen for specific epilepsy care coordination. 24 epilepsy support groups were conducted. Cni conducted over 25 patient-centric educational events in all neurological areas, along with 8 physician oriented continuing medical education events, including one neurosurgical conference and journal conferences and video case reviews in movement disorders and epilepsy.
