Collective Housing and New Growth Alternatives (CHANGA) was created to counter the unsuccessful attempts of a young deaf man to find affordable, safe, deaf-friendly housing. Changa Mukasa is a young deaf man with no other disabilities intent on independent living. Due to the obstacles he faced, the organization evolved to help others who are deaf or hard of hearing. This is a small organization and its purpose is to provide rental housing that includes the latest technology in electrical wiring and plumbing to provide safer environments for the deaf. Improvements include strobe smoke detectors, motion sensor faucets, visitor notification, video relay communications and others. The organization is in great need of funding for operations, acquiring housing for rehabilitation, rental grants and outreach education.
