Mission: Code for America helps city governments become more open efficient and responsive by connecting the talents of cutting-edge web developers with people who deliver city services and want to embrace the transformative power of the web to achieve more impact with less money.
Programs: Each participating city identifies the need for a project, and is assigned a team of five fellows who will develop that application for the city over the course of the 11 month cycle. Beyond simply procuring a piece of software, the cities engage in a deep multi-directional exchange between the city government and the fellows, but also among the host cities.
I was a Code for America fellow in 2013. Loved the program and the org. CfA helps its people get better and has some impressive impact along the way.
Code for America is a great organization. I couldn't imagine a better way to improve government. The fellows are surely passing up on much larger salaries elsewhere, so they must be passionate about Code for America.
