Causes: Arts & Culture, Natural History & Natural Science Museums
Mission: To inspire, through science and education, a passion for nature, the protection of natural diversity, the fostering of health, and leadership to a sustainable future.
Programs: Collections and research: museum curators carried out field research in canada, costa rica, ethiopia, tanzania, the great lakes region, and many local ohio sites in the 2017 fiscal year. They carried out archaeological digs, excavated fossils, and prepared specimens to document the history and diversity of life on earth. Museum researchers discovered new species, including a large extinct otter and several dinosaurs that were previously unknown to science. Researchers from around the world visit the museum to study its collections for scientific study. The museum holds the largest well-documented human skeleton collection in the world, which is used by scientists, medical device companies, and many others. (continued on schedule o)the natural areas program conserves a system of nature preserves, totaling 8,100 acres in size. Our preserves best represent the broad spectrum of biodiversity found within the geographic area of northern ohio. Each of our natural areas harbors one or more distinct biotic community; including hardwood forest, lake erie island, fossil dune ridge, marsh, swamp and glacial wetland, among many others. They serve as an outstanding resource for studying and teaching about the remarkable biological diversity of the region. Museum preserves are model scientific field laboratories in which researchers can conduct long-term studies in locations relatively free from human interference, as well as spectacular locations to take the general public on nature field trips.
education: the museum offers unique learning opportunities including hands-on workshops, gallery, health, planetarium, live animal programs and self-conducted exhibits, outreach and interactive videoconferencing programs. The museum offered on-site school programs for 42,889 students and delivered outreach programs to 21,994 students during fiscal year 2017. In addition, the museum delivered programs to 9,745 students from our interactive videoconferencing studios to 19 states and 2 countries.
the museum presented a total of five special exhibitions during the 2017 fiscal year. These included two major touring exhibitions, "our global kitchen: food, nature, culture and "amazing species: life at the limits", both developed by the american museum of natural history. The museum also completed an extensive renovation of its smead discovery center, a 3,000-square foot hands-on family engagement gallery.
