I have been going to the City Theatre for years before joining the board. The shows are always interesting, engaging and produced with the highest quality. They will transport you to places you have never been, get you to think about ideas or situations in a new way and you will leave feeling your time has been well spent. The actors and the production designs are excellent and draw from both local and national talent.

Not only is City Theatre innovative and willing to let new plays appear on their stages, but they encourage and support Middle and High School Playwright's Festivals each year and award prizes. Then when the plays are approved they help stage them with real actors and show them usually in October. So City Theatre is important for all who appreciate their efforts and expertise to all. City Theatre is perhaps Pittsburgh's most invigorating and groundbreaking theater; as well taking a prominent role in weaving unique tapestry that makes the Pittsburgh art scene has such an exciting and thriving regional asset.

Differentiating it from Pittsburgh’s other theaters is its focus on new works written within the last five years – which ensure that each season, its programming reflects a snapshot of today's world, with all its complexities, challenges, and delights.

By including City among your Pittsburgh Gives donations, you support and validate its steadfast commitment to nurturing new plays and new playwrights – including the Young Playwrights Education initiative that partners with local students and teacher to showcase and nurture our next generation of artistic leaders.

When City Theatre isn’t not showcasing a national or world premiere, it maintains a direct link to New York's finest. The first play of this season is a runaway hit in NYC, "Time Stands Still," and Pittsburgh is the first place to get it following that successful run. This is because visionary Artistic Director Tracy Brigden and her staff have been vying for it for 2+ years, even before its production in New York. That's just one peak into the ways that City Theatre has its thumb on the pulse of American theatre and actively helps to shape its legacy.

It is all of this that makes actors from all over the country want to get involved with City productions, and why Pittsburghers with a passion for something new, thought-provoking and remarkable commit themselves to being City Theatre supporters.

I was a professional theatre director and have seen theatre around the world. I say with all seriousness that City Theatre measures up to the best. The Theatre's commitment to new works brings exciting artists and ideas to Pittsburgh in stunning, well-acted productions. In The Amish Project, one woman played more than 10 distinct roles in a heart-rending examination of the murder of Amish children in Ohio. When January Feels like Summer was the kind of play you expect to see in New York--funny, caustic, insightful. I could go on and on. I have never been disappointed!
