Former donor. Once you give, they send so much mail. All the time. Every month they ask for money. On a budget. It's to much. Not sure if my money was going to help homeless or so much mail.

City Rescue Mission (CRM) provides emergency shelter for men, women, and women with children in Jacksonville FL, but CRM is SO much more! I volunteer at the McDuff Avenue Campus, home to the LifeBuilders Recovery Program. LifeBuilders is a Bible-based, non-denominational Christian, long-term residential recovery program. Participants in the LifeBuilders Program live at the McDuff campus for approximately 18 months.

CRM exists to transform the lives of the homeless and needy, serving them through the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. Also very important: CRM receives NO government funding (Federal State or Local).

I worked for 34 years as an Air Traffic Controller, and three years ago I retired. Jesus taught that we should help those in need, and so I applied to volunteer at CRM. I thought I might work in the kitchen, (many years ago I worked as a prep cook), but during the application process became aware CRM needed help with data input (EXCEL). Now six months later I am more like an administrative assistant! I help organize hygiene donations for the needy. I collate, organize, and meter mail (you should see this folding machine I get to run). And yes I still help with data input. But one of the best times of my day is at 11:45 the men eat, and I get to sit down and have lunch with the students in the LifeBuilders program. I have become friends with several of the guys, and hey, we usually talk about sports. But I also try to encourage them as best I can.

I normally volunteer once a week, and since I travel 35 miles one way to the McDuff campus, I like to put in a full day if I can. I work from 9:30AM until 3:30PM (times are approx. remember I’m retired) Today is November 11 and because there is so much work right now I am coming in twice a week until after Christmas. I enjoy all the different projects I have been involved with, and I like that once I am shown how to do the job, they trust me to get the task accomplished. Check out the website www.crmjax.org You can request a tour of the McDuff Avenue Campus, and there is a good chance I might be the tour guide:)
