Mission: City lights theater company creates provocative live productions that engage, inspire, and challenge audiences and artists alike through innovative concepts, intimate staging, and uncompromising storytelling.
Programs: Productions - city lights theater company of san jose, inc. Produces a season of 6 plays per year in the company's intimate 101-seat venue, and is committed to presenting exhilarating, thought-provoking plays that speak eloquently to our audiences. The company actively develops and produces new plays through the new play reader series, some of which became a part of a regular season. City light's six play season is the main focus of the company's programming efforts. The season runs september - august, with each production running 4-6 weeks. Performances occur thursday - sunday. The 2016-2017 season included other desert cities, by jon robin baitz, calendar girls by tim firth, (continued on schedule o)ideation by aaron loeb, the world premiere adaptation of mary shelley's frankenstien by kit wilder, rapture, blister, burn by gina gionfriddo, and lizzie by steven chesllik-demeyer, alan stevens hewitt, and tim maner. 9,487 people benefited from this program. City light's lights up! New play readers festival gives local playwrights an opportunity to develop their plays with one-night-only workshop readings performed over one weekend, each followed by an audience talkback discussion. Promising scripts are chosen by a volunteer committee and then assigned to a director who casts the reading and conducts 3 or so rehearsals. The company conducts this festival with 4 performances over 3 days. This program served 221 people.
youth & education program - engages students and their teachers actively in the dramatic arts. At the core of the program is the company's commitment to offering significantly discounted tickets to students and educators. The company provides study guides for each play to enhance the learning experience for students that attend the productions. 1,484 people benefited from this program.
music @ city lights - 6-8 one-night only concerts featuring local artists. City lights booked the acts, provided the venue, advance and night of the event box office (online and phone sales, house management) and technical support (lighting and sound). The majority of the proceeds went directly to the artist(s), with a small per ticket service fee going to city lights. About 394 people benefited form this program
