Mission: City lights theater company creates provocative live productions that engage, inspire, and challenge audiences and artists alike through innovative concepts, intimate staging, and uncompromising storytelling.
Programs: Productions - city lights theater company of san jose, inc. Produces a season of six plays per year in the company's intimate 101-seat venue, and is committed to presenting exhilarating, thought-provoking plays that speak eloquently to our audiences. The company actively develops and produces new plays through our new play readers series, some of which become a part of a regular season. City lights' six play season is the main focus of the company's programming efforts. The season runs september-august, with each production running 4-6 weeks. Performances occur thursdays-sundays. The 2012-2013 season featured 44 plays for 44 presidents, christmas shorts, ching chong chinaman, hedda gabler, spacebar and the rocky horror show. 7,840 people benefited from this program. City lights' new play readers series gives local playwrights an opportunity to develop their plays in a one-night-only workshop setting, followed by an audience talkback discussion. Promising scripts are chosen by a volunteer committee and then assigned to a director who casts the reading and conducts 3 or so rehearsals. The company offers 4 installments of this series throughout the year. This program served 121 people.
youth & education program - engages students and their teachers actively in the dramatic arts. At the core of the program is the company's commitment to offering significantly discounted tickets to students and educators. The company provides study guides for each play to enhance the learning experience for students that attend the productions. This program served 1,614 people.
the lights & music concert series - co-produced with g# entertainment. 6-8 one-night only concerts featuring local artists. G# entertainment coordinated the booking and provided marketing support (both print and online) for each event. City lights provided box office and night of the event technical support (lighting and sound). The majority of the proceeds went directly to the artist(s), with a small per ticket service fee going to city lights and a small booking/coordination fee going to g# entertainment. This program was suspended as of june 2013. About 424 people benefited form this program
music at city lights - 6-8 one-night only concerts featuring local artists. City lights booked the acts, provided the venue, advance and night of the event box office (online and phone sales, house management) and technical support (lighting and sound).
