I have been a foster with this rescue for over a decade, fostering lots of dogs needing homes, and can say first hand that City Dogs goes above and beyond for their rescued animals and volunteers to support them throughout the process. It has been a very rewarding experience fostering with City Dogs and I even adopted my sausage dog Marvin from them during the pandemic. The organization is run by dedicated volunteers who love animals.
CDCK is a great rescue org that really cares about the animals in their care, and also the people. I've fostered three dogs through CDCK and the open communication and guidance throughout has made the process a breeze.
Professional, dedicated organization. Caring members/volunteers who go above and beyond to give animals a stable home
We’ve fostered 3 dogs through CDCK and have had such a great experience working with them. We’ve experienced nothing but professionalism from this volunteer-led org and most importantly, great compassion and care for the dogs and cats they save. We’re so grateful for their work and proud to be a part of it!
Pic of our most recent foster, Hazel, rocking an adopt-me vest!
We have adopted 3 amazing dogs from this terrific organization! Their caring and expertise and the quality of their work and organization make finding the perfect new family member easy. CDCK is terrific!
City Dogs does really incredible work saving the lives of thousands of dogs and cats. They are very well organized and all volunteer, which makes them doubly impressive!
I have loved being a foster at CDCK over the past year and have overseen countless rewarding adoptions. The team at CDCK is top notch and truly dedicated to ensuring the animals end up in safe and loving homes.
I have been volunteering with CDCK for almost two years now. I truly value this organization. Through my volunteering tenure alone they saved hundreds of dogs and cats. They work tirelessly to keep saving more animal lives. They have a really robust structure and a rigorous approval process to ensure that animals not only find homes but find great homes where they will be safe and cared for. They are very organized and have various teams responsible for specific aspects of the rescue mission. I feel privileged to have been accepted as a volunteer for them and for the ability that they give me to keep helping cats.
I have been volunteering as a foster with CDK for 6 months now and it has been an extremely rewarding experience, made easier due to all of the amazing team members and volunteers! I’ve now had 4 foster dogs, all with different personalities and challenges, and have always received the support I need from my foster assistant, Eleanor, and the rest of the team. Taking the dogs to the vet if needed is an easy experience with plenty of locations to choose from. This is a great nonprofit who wouldn’t be able to do what they do without donor support! Keep it up!
I've worked in animal welfare for over 15 years. I'm so impressed by this organization. There are hundreds of CDCK volunteers and they are so dedicated---they do everything from foster animals to set up virtual adoption sessions. These folks are literally saving lives every single day. And they aren't just saving dogs and cats, but also impacting the communities where they bring animals up from. It' s just amazing.
I love how this charity does so much good and saves so many dogs and cats--and how the animals go directly into foster care so they don't have to spend more time in a shelter. I give to many animal charities and this one's "business model" is amazing. I highly recommend it!
I give one star because there is no zero to choose from. I haven't seen a rescue or shelter so difficult to deal with. I am 100% sure they kidnapped my cat from my community and hostage her for donation and selling as a business rather than a non profit organization. Pure intention matters! I have donated to multiple organizations monthly base, raising fund for good purpose, money is not a problem for me. However, I don't want to reward bad behaviors. The missing time for my cat and the one they posted online matches and the very detailed stripes pattern matches. It's questionable that one employee said she from North Carolina, another one said she from West Virginia. I have my cat since she was born, I can recognize this cat from eye contact. Well, if you know your children, you know them by the spirit, right? I sent them many details to JUST take a look, they refused. It's not built to help ppl or animals at all. I will show how my cat look like and how sick she is now in their foster home. I'm deeply saddened and worried about her. She is territorial as a cat does. She has been a happy cat in her own home, wtf they think this is a rescue. Now I have to either kiss their ass or be assertive to fight against this negativity just to get her rescued from these horrible ppl. F that! If they don't practice as ethical as it should be, this is a big big issue! I put the photos of how my cat looked before and how she looks now in their foster homes(one with name caption) I am seriously furious and frustrated about this. If they couldn't give me an explanation why they made it so difficult to meet the cat. I have to say I will use my popularity and influence to the extreme to make things right!!!
Now they took down her profile, if nothing wrong, why they doing so? Think about that.
I love volunteering for City Dogs. I've been involved with this rescue for about ten years in various capacities. I feel a sense of community with the other people involved and am passionate about the mission.

I started out as a volunteer with CDR, became an adopter (almost five years ago), and now am back to being a hard core volunteer. The CDR community has enriched my life significantly and I enjoy even the boring admin work that is part of my volunteer load. I have found the CDR management to be open to feedback and even the occasional criticism, and always striving for improvement. I believe we employ best practices and strive for efficiency in an often chaotic environment with so many moving parts. We truly put the dogs (and cats) first, spending literally hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical care each year, and doing as much as we can to support our fosters and even alumni in need. I love being a part of this organization and hope I can continue to volunteer for a long time.
City Kitties is a great rescue. So many hard working volunteers that save so many animals over the 10+ years they have been around. I love what you all do for all the orphaned animals in need.
Thank you,
Daniela
I have worked for CDCK for 2 years now. We are top notch organization that is volunteer ran and where 85 cents of every dollar directly goes to the animals. Thank you
I love city dogs rescue. I adopted my dog from then in 2015 and it was a great experience. This is a great organization.
CDCK is the best. So professional and always doing right by the animals! I have donated for years and will continue to
I volunteer with City Dogs and City Kitties rescue as an intake volunteer and a foster volunteer. It has been a pleasure volunteering for them. Everyone really cares about saving dogs and cats from high-kill shelters in West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina and works as a team to place them in caring homes in the Washington, DC area. There is so much love and commitment here.
I adopted from City Dogs after being an intake volunteer for a few months. Their work made it possible for me to adopt my sweet boy, Riggs. On top of that, every volunteer experience has been overwhelmingly positive and well communicated with a great group of people!
CDCK is amazing! I love volunteering with them and have gotten my husband and friends involved as well. They are thorough and thoughtful and it really feels like a community. We also adopted our dog from them and they provided lots of support and clear guidance during the process.
I am volunteer (9 years) and also a foster and adopter with City Dogs and City Kitties Rescue (CDCKR). This organization is an amazing collection of staff and volunteers who come together to save dogs and cats from rural shelters with high euthanasia rates. Every week, dogs and cats are rescued and brought to the metro DC area to be given a chance at finding their forever home. To volunteer with CDCKR is tremendously rewarding as the animals are so worthy of a second chance. Everyone who works with the rescue is dedicated to the same goal - to save the lives of dogs and cats. There is a great comradery and it has been a very rewarding experience. I have even foster failed and now have my wonderful kitty, Joey, thanks to the efforts of CDCKR.

I am both a volunteer and an adopter with this fantastic organization. City Dogs (and Cats) Rescue partners with high kill shelters in rural communities in West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. Three weekends every month a van comes from one of these shelters filled with the most wonderful and amazing dogs and cats who are given the opportunity for a new life with a loving family in the metro DC area. The best thing about this organization is that they never give up on an animal that they rescue. Once a city dog (or cat) always a city dog or cat. The cat that I adopted from them had been caught in an animal trap and had a traumatic amputation of one of his front legs as well as a crush injury to the other. He would’ve literally been unadoptable if left in the shelter where he was found. The rescue not only stepped forward and offered to save him but then they did a fundraiser to pay for the surgery to stabilize his remaining front leg (see attached pictures). They made this commitment without meeting him. Once they make a commitment to save an animal they will see that commitment through to the end. They never give up.
Almost everyone in this organization is a volunteer. We all have different roles but are all driven by the same goal which is to save these awesome dogs and cats.
Adopting two dogs from City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue was an incredibly rewarding and positive experience. All the volunteers are dedicated and genuinely care about the animals' well-being and their adoptive families. The team at the rescue guided us through the necessary paperwork, background checks, and interviews with patience and enthusiasm. They were eager to ensure that the dogs we adopted would be a good fit for our family and lifestyle.
Beyond the joy of welcoming these loving animals into our lives, adopting from this rescue organization also connected us with a compassionate community of pet lovers. The dogs we brought home quickly became beloved members of our family, filling our home with happiness and love. We are deeply grateful to City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue for making this possible, as giving these dogs a second chance at a happy life warms our hearts every day.
Overall, our experience with City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue was extraordinary. They are an exceptional organization dedicated to finding forever homes for animals in need, and we wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking to adopt a pet.
I got involved with volunteering at City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue after running into the organization at an adoption event in Shirlington. The commitment and care the organization has for all the animals is above and beyond! As a volunteer with dogs, I have seen the dedication to showcasing each of their individual personalities and finding the best home fit!
I have volunteered with CDCK in a few capacities and can speak to the staff commitment to the mission and the efficient use of resources. Donating to this organization is a great return on investment if you want to help save dog and cat lives from their rural partner shelters.
We adopted our beloved Nero (fka James) from City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue in 2015 and couldn't be happier with the love, care, and devotion this organization shows in ensuring these treasured animals end up in furever homes where they are showered with love and care. As an almost completely volunteer run organization I'm always amazed at the work this organization is able to do with rescuing animals.
In 2015, we adopted our pup from City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue, and shortly thereafter, I began volunteering for this amazing organization that has rescued nearly 10,000 dogs and cats in its 10 year history. This accomplishment would not be possible without the incredibly committed and talented staff and volunteers. Now that the organization has a permanent intake and operations center, I'm excited to see what additional important work it can do to advance its mission of saving dogs and cats. Its future is bright!
I've been affiliated with City Dogs and City Kitties in one capacity or another for several years now. I started out fostering cats for them, which led to me adopting a cat--and dog!--from them, which then led to me fostering dogs for them, and, most recently, to me now helping out on the organizational side with getting their animals adopted. It's been a slippery slope--but of the absolute best kind! The sense of community and dedication that runs throughout this organization is truly exceptional and what has, in turn, strengthened my own ties to it. With City Dogs and City Kitties, you do good, feel good, and have fun along the way. Doesn't get much more of a win-win than that!
I adopted my two cats and dog through CDCK and now volunteer for the organization. Everyone I work with is so passionate, and works so hard for the group because of this incredible cause and the fantastic work that they do. I am so grateful that they came into my life, not only because of my amazing four legged family members, but because of the great people it has brought into my life. I am incredibly fulfilled!
Fabulous rescue group. I adopted my sweet boy from them and he was well taken care and loved by his foster. City Dog Rescue is a great agency. My adoption was such a great experience that I started volunteering for City Dog.
I have adopted two cats from CDR and volunteer to foster cats with them as well, and it has been an amazing experience! They provide great vet care to all the cats and dogs they rescue, and give myself and other volunteers any support we may need. Everyone in this organization loves animals and is doing fantastic work to get cats and dogs out of high kill shelters and into loving homes.
Volunteering and fostering with City Dogs & City Kitties Rescue has brought so much joy, fulfillment, and fun to my life. I have met truly amazing people, and I feel so grateful to be a part of the CDCK community and its lifesaving mission.
Simply amazing set of people who are mostly volunteers. Passionate people doing the most they can to save animals. Helped us adopt a dog and can’t say enough about how great the experience was! We’re so grateful we volunteer with them now!
Both of our dogs were adopted from CDR. Both adoptions were amazing. Great people working together for a great cause.

I’ve loved volunteering for City Dogs Rescue and & City Kitties. The care and guidance they offer volunteers makes it so easy to be a foster, adoption counselor, intake instructor and more. The rigor they apply to vetting and assigning animals to new homes is top notch and the community is unmatched.
I adopted my guy, Speck, from City Dogs Rescue and City Kittens. This group takes such good care of the animals they rescue and they do a lot of work to find the best forever homes for them. My guy was a hard to place dog but they took such great care of him until they found a home for him with me. This has got to be one of the best rescues to work with. I was so impressed with my experience I decided to volunteer with them.
I am a foster with City Dogs and they have done an amazing job connecting people to dogs and cats that need homes! I've found their other volunteers and coordinators to be responsive and incredibly kind!
Committed and organized volunteers make this organization a stand out. We adopted two dogs from them and fostered one. City Dog was so professional - Efficient logistical coordination, clear and transparent expectations, timely and on the point support for the fosters and prospective adopters. Adoption coordinators are very knowledgeable and helpful. The organization creates a sense of community and I continue to check in years after the adoption.
I have been fostering for City Dogs Rescue and City Kitties for several years and adopted my dog from this organization. CDR&CK saves so many dogs and cats and provides critical support to their partner shelters. The volunteer community is truly incredible, and there is continued support for fosters and adopters, which really makes CDR&CK stand out.
I adopted my cat, Callie, in July 2019. I was so taken with the organization I started volunteering processing adoption applications and this weekend, I'll finalize my 100th cat adoption! Cities Kitties is filled with the best people, and the best cats! Everyone is so dedicated and attentive. The community that has been created is also invaluable as a cat owner. I'd give it a hundred stars if I could.
I can't say enough good about City Dogs Rescue and City Kitties! We adopted our guy, Spot, from them last year. He was 11 at the time and had no teeth, and you've gotta love a rescue organization that will save kitties like Spot. Every single interaction with all the volunteers has been amazing - so great that I started volunteering myself... And now we foster cats, too! Spot (watching bird videos) and some past sweet fosters pictured!
I adopted my rescue kitten through City Dogs over the quarantine time period. Since joining this community I have been surprised at how supportive and caring the City Dogs and City Kittens organization is. They were there to answer all of my questions but they constantly are doing good for animals all over the DMV. They deserve so much more credit and help than they get. Everybody is amazing!!
I have had the pleasure of both adopting from City Dogs Rescue and working with and training many of the wonderful pups that City Dogs adopts to our DC and DMV human clients. As a CPDT-KA trainer I am thrilled that City Dogs Rescue is constantly looking to improve their process in placing dogs and helping owners understand behavior, manners, and concerns with each dog as an individual. I have frequently seen City Dogs place the happiness and well being of the dog over the placement, meaning if a dog is not thriving in a home they are open to rehoming and fostering and finding trainer's that understand and promote positive, science based training as well as working with the local veterinarians and vet behaviorists to address concerns
There is no place I’d rather volunteer with. I’ve adopted two cats from this organization and my experience has been great. The best part of CDR&CK is the community that you gain when you adopt. Everyone is so nice and helpful. People are always willing to help and offer advice in times of need. The volunteers are very passionate and work to ensure that every animal goes to the best possible forever home.
I appreciated the process of adopting from City Dogs Rescue that I’ve been volunteering ever since. Such an amazing group of volunteers who make sure that all the fur babies find their furever homes!
I started fostering with City Dogs Rescue late in 2019 and have had 2 awesome City Dogs stay with me . One went to his forever home on New Year's Eve! And the other is with me now, still looking for his forever home. I have been so impressed with City Dogs, they are well organized, have a huge network of dedicated volunteers, and use their funds so efficiently. As a foster I have had great support, and feel confident that we are finding the best homes for these pups. And seeing them adapt so quickly as the covid situation unfolded has been impressive. I'm proud to be a foster for them!
We adopted Maxine a year ago from CDR and she’s pretty much the greatest creature to happen to us! CDR has become an invaluable resource to us since we started on this dog-parent adventure.
I adopted two dogs from City Dogs Rescue and was so impressed with the organization, I began volunteering over three years ago. The organization is very well-run by dedicated volunteers with a high commitment to the well-being of the animals they rescue. Whenever I have questions, I get quick responses and helpful information. I have fostered over 20 dogs and encourage anyone who has thought about it to take the plunge, its a great experience when you see your foster dog find their forever family. I look forward to continuing to volunteer with this amazing organization, who saved my two wonderful dogs!
I adopted my two cats from City Dogs Rescue and City Kitties. They processed my application in a time manner. Volunteers were friendly and always available to answer my inquiries. I cannot imagine my life without my cats! Thank you for CDR and CK to bring them to my life!
They are terrific they work with rural shelters who do not have resources to keep animals until they’re adopted these unwanted animals would otherwise be euthanized. There’s a great group of dedicated volunteers who help serve the mission through fostering, helping with transport and many other roles.
I’ve volunteered with City Dogs Rescue for 3 years. The organization has thorough adoption and foster processes, plus they are accountable. Quality support for local adopters and Partner Shelters. Good ties with the community... we just need more foster families to help continue our mission of rescuing very deserving animals (such as Ruby, Ginger, Nico, Kira, and Dan, pictured) !!
I have been volunteering for 3+ years with CDR - started as a foster and now a foster assistant. Their processes for adoption and fostering are thorough. Support they provide adopters are quality and they don’t stretch their resources thin. We need more fosters to take these wonderful dogs! We get dogs and cats a stepping stone to their next lives, and so far, this organization has done an incredible job at that!l.
I have adopted from other rescues and was so impressed by CDR I decided to volunteer. The following reasons are why CDR is amazing!
1. The support with issues both medical and behavioral is supportive and helpful and immediate!
2. The application is very thorough and they require a home visit. This ensures the dog or cat goes to the best home. Please do see their application! It is amazing!
3. I have been a volunteer Adoption Counselor, have done Home visits, did all Foster fail adoptions for a while, and now since I have moved out of state, am helping with online work. It has been my pleasure to find friends wonderful rescue animals from CDR.
4. The fundraising helps others. At Thanksgiving they have a pie ‘sale’ . One can donate their pie to a family who also gets a meal. Being out of state , this is a great way to give back!
Their fundraising in the Spring is online and fun. One never feels obligated to contribute.
5. The many like minded friends who love animals...CDR provides a Facebook connection. Here is where you need guidance aluminaes and fosters chime in immediately to help!
6. The animals come first! It always is so wonderful to see alum post pictures of their dog or cat and the length they go to provide safe, clean , homes for these animals and the before and after pictures! Adotaversaries are celebrated. Vacations many times are inclusive, weekends are for hiking, snuggling, and adventures!
7. Best rescue ever!
City Dogs Rescue (CDR) has had a tremendous impact on my life. They rescued the love of my life, Sasha, from a rundown shelter in South Carolina where she was on the euthanasia list. They gave her, and so many other dogs in her situation, a new shot at life and a chance to receive the love and affection that they so desperately deserve.
I regularly donate to them when they place a call out for help in rescuing some at need dogs or cats. They work tirelessly to give these sweet little loves and new chance at life.
City Dogs Rescue is a wonderful organization to work with, as they are working tirelessly to serve their community and help get dogs and cats to happy homes.
City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties is a rescue organization that goes far above and beyond the call of duty to rescue and find homes for dogs and cats. The amount of support and community knowledge you receive when you adopt from CDR is unparalleled. After adopting 2 dogs from CDR, we wanted to stay involved and have fostered nearly a dozen more! CDR and it's team are truly exceptional!

We are terribly sorry that your cat is missing. We know how truly awful that must be. We can, however, promise you that the cat in question came from one of our rural shelter partners. We have been a 501(c)3 charity since 2011, rescuing 1200+ animals per year, adopting out close to 7500 pets since 2018 alone. We have thousands of adopters and 500+ volunteers who can attest to the fact that all we do is try to rescue animals, many of whom face euthanasia without us. Further, our adoption fees usually don’t even cover the costs involved in rescuing these animals. Again, we are sorry for your current situation and we wish you the best.
