Citizens For Animal Protection Inc

I have popped into CAP every time I am in the Katy area just to love on some of the animals and possible adopt. I have stopped by 3 times over the last 6 months and have been turned away all three times, most recently today, a Saturday. I understand Covid protocol as we have all been part of this protocol for months now. But to be turned away, when there is literally maybe a handful of people in the building, on a Saturday only leads me to believe that CAP is not that interested in getting the pets adopted. I mean, come on, we can all go into a restaurant to eat now, but we can't walk into an animal shelter on a Saturday to possible adopt a homeless pet???? Give me a break! It also leads me to believe that if I was turned away on a weekend, when the shelter could get far more adoptions than other times of the week, and that there is but a handful of ppl in this large building on a Saturday, that most of the poor animals in the facility will meet their end in euthanasia. The grumpy old lady did not even offer an appointment to me but lead me to the paper applications and escorted me out of the building!!! It was 1:00 on a Saturday! I might have been able to bring a pet home today! I threw the applications on the ground, said a prayer for the poor animals, and vowed to never return. This place always has a "bitchy" vibe about it, but I usually overlook that for the sake of giving some love to the animals. The grumpy lady even said "oh no! we dont do that anymore!" when I told her I like to come and give some attention to the poor animals in cages. She has no business working with dogs, cats or people. So damn sad. I guess it is more about the donations than actually giving these pets homes. How harmful would it have been for me to be allowed to look around and leave. I was in a mask and would have been open to any other protocol but never got the chance and neither did any of the animals get the chance for a great home with me! Good luck CAP with the financial part of your business but that is what you will be left with.

CAP is an outstanding resource for animals and the community. We have adopted two animals from CAP and also taken stray animals to CAP. My daughter has been a member of their children's group for years. The shelter does a great job of outreach and education. Due to their programs with scouts and other children's groups, I know of several families who have chosen to adopt rather than shop! After being involved one way or another with this organization for years, I have seen nothing but the greatest care for animals (including rodents and others) and education. Go CAP!

I think it's funny that everyone writing fantastic reviews and accusing the former volunteers (if you could read then you would know thats what they are) of being disgruntled former employees works at the facility. 3 of the 5 reviews is by staff members. There is some truth to it all. The shelter is poorly designed to accomadate large dogs, there are some structural shortcomings to the facility, but then again, it is non profit and they are lucky they got the building in the first place. There is mismanagement of funds. But the staff does care, but they're also forced with the everyday reality of animal care. Unfortunately, you can't save every animal or take in every animal. No shelter is a pleasant place to be, but CAP does the best they can.

In response to the former volunteer who was not pleased or impressed with CAP's policies and procedures; unfortunately, there are subjects that the staff may find uncomfortable for open discussion with members of the public and/or volunteers. I know that for myself, I will, and have discussed things that are uncomfortable BUT I am always honest. As for "covering up" information; What do you really want to know? We work very hard and often VERY late. As for "Rich & self-serving", I live with my parents! Do you really think I would live with my parents if I had the chance to move out? I am not complaining about what I make because ITS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY! Sure it makes things hard, but that is NOT WHY I AM HERE! I'm here to help educate and bring understanding and compassion for our community. I am sorry that your experience at the shelter was not what you expected, but I guess you just cannot please everyone. I hope that you do find a place that you are comfortable with.

It is unfortunate a few people are writing such terrible reviews. They must be disgruntled employees that are no longer with the organization. I am a major donor and would not donate money to Citizens for Animal Protection if I thought they were not spending donated money correctly. I am at the shelter probably 5 times a week. I have never seen anything happening at the shelter as one of the volunteers wrote about. When we had our Grand Opening of the new shelter the Director of the Houston SPCA told me that Citizens for Animal Protection set a new standard for animal shelters. A number of shelters throughout the US have already contacted the architect of Citizens for Animal Protection to design their new facility.

As a former volunteer this organization has taken a turn for the worse. From about 2007 on they used donations to build a grand but poorly designed shelter built more as a shrine to their big donors than a home for helpless animals. Now that it is complete it is nearly four times the size of the old shelter but takes only adopts out about 20% more animals. Due to poor shelter design and mismanagement they turn away large dogs on a regular basis. And apparently they are sending out false positive reviews. The Rita Benton that wrote the glowing 5 star review is the Marketing Director for the shelter.

CAP is a FABULOUS organization! They go above and beyond for the animals. If they have more food donated than what the animals can use before it expires or goes bad, they sell the food and use the money to offset vet bills or heartworm treatments. As they are TOTALLY NON-PROFIT they look for clever innovative ways to treat and care for more animals. They have a HUGE Foster Home program that allows sick animals to be treated in the comfort of someone's home. Any negative comments about this Organization are not truthful and are made by former disgruntled employees or volunteers.

after seeing the things I did while volunteering there...I would never donate an item nor a penney to these people again....these are very rich self serving ,untruthful people wanting attention for what they do and not being truthful to themselves nor the public...what a shame for the animals!
