Mission: Citadel Theatre is committed to producing powerful works of insight and complexity that illuminate the challenges and joys of the human experience. Dedicated to maintaining the highest standard of professionalism, Citadel seeks to provide both a creative haven for passionate, visionary directors, writers, actors and designers and a home for an audience that seeks to experience the emotional and intellectual richness that the best theatre inspires.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Every year more than 10,000 theatre-goers are able to enjoy quality live entertainment.
Geographic areas served: Lake County and Northeast Illinois.
Programs: The Theatre: We are a professional non-equity, not-for-profit theatre based in Lake Forest, Illinois; one hour north of Chicago. Citadel productions include dramas, comedies, cutting-edge new works, contemporary and classical selections. Education: We outreach to the community on many levels. Our multiple classes for children provide a wonderful learning experience, rich with theatre games, improvisation, voice development, character work, scene study and movement. Taught by a staff of teachers who are both working theatre professionals and experienced educators, students gain confidence and communication skills, learning to integrate creativity with teamwork. The Academy at Citadel Theatre in collaboration with Lake Forest Dance Academy offers students the opportunity to audition for our Triple Threat Performance Ensemble. Adult classes with a focus on auditioning skills, monologue work, and scene study are also offered. Please visit our Education section for more information on these programs. Monday Night Playreading Series: Our Monday Night Playreading Series is an ongoing event that provides local playwrights, actors, and directors with an invaluable opportunity. The playwrights have their work rehearsed and performed by professional actors and also are given a forum to receive feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their play. Local actors and directors are given the opportunity to work and expose their craft to critics, audience, playwrights and other professionals that attend our readings. We have provided a number of just-graduated directors a shot at their first professional directing credit, along with giving established professional directors a chance to work on exciting new scripts.
