Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection

Mission: We are a community that passionately believes our brightest future is one lived in harmony with nature. Founded in 1988, and open to the public since Earth Day 1990, the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm today is a prime example of community caring. We provide nature-focused education, research, entertainment and outdoor activities for more than 100,000 visitors a year, while promoting sound stewardship of land, water and wildlife. The Friends of the Cibolo Wilderness, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that oversees the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm (called the CNC&F for short), began as a handful of friends working to make a dream a reality. It has since evolved into a grassroots organization of individuals and partners committed to the value of hands-on nature education and conservation of natural resources, supported by the generosity of donors. Additionally, the Herff Farm at the Cibolo offers workshops and programs to teach families simple techniques for sustainable living. It includes an organic demonstration "Inspiration" garden and is home to the CNC&F's Farmer's Market at the Cibolo, open March through December.

I was enchanted from the first moment! The facility is beautiful and thoughtfully planned. They use it for all the many programs offered to children and the community. The land is expertly managed: invasive species of foliage and wildlife have been re-located so that native species can flourish in a restored habitat. The newly acquired Herff Farm is an incredible addition! The Farm is located on the other side of the creek. The public can shop for fresh veggies, eggs and other homemade items at the Saturday morning Farmer's Market. Eventually, the historic Herff farm house that dates back to the American Civil War will be open for tours. And I can't say enough about the beautiful Cibolo Creek! The stands of Bald Cypress trees that flank the riverbank on each side are stunning! And the cool creek water trickles by with it's vast treasure of fish, turtles, leaves and other hordes of beauty. I encourage everyone to come discover and play! It's such a hidden nugget tucked away in the middle of Boerne, TX! I love it!

As a part of their annual Volunteer appreciation day, I was asked to come and give a fly fishing seminar to a group of adults who regularly volunteer at Cibolo Nature Center. I enjoyed getting to share fly fishing and fly tying with these wonderful people, but I really enjoyed hearing about the many groups of children that they had introduced to nature and life in a small stream at the center. I could sense the committment to the mission of the center that permiated through the staff and these volunteers. Cibolo Nature Center would be an amazing place anywhere, but it is truly amazing to think it has been created in Boerne, TX and is serving the children and adults of this region with an ability to connect to nature and learn of its wonders.

There is nothing like the summer concert series, calls Songs and Stories, held about every other week during the summer. An evening under the oaks and stars with friends, refreshment and music is exsquisite.

The place where everything seems perfect - the Cibolo Nature Center Jacqueline Beretta November, 2009 Rarely do I leave the side of my trusty Dell notebook, which is my life, my precious mode of communication, my voice, my constant companion that helps me create stories for TexasNonprofits. But this morning, I was compelled to bond with nature. Having grown up with access to all the peace and beauty that the Texas hill country has to offer thanks to my father's ranch, I find myself trying to re-create the tranquil beauty I remember in every house I acquire.I tend to plant huge privacy hedges, add gravel driveways, roaring fireplaces, and bird feeders, everything to simulate the wonderful shabby chic feeling of living in the country. But sometimes, my home is not enough, and I must have access to the country, to feel the peacefulness of it all, smell the fresh air, and touch the flowers to be sane.
