I was a volunteer a volunteer at the annual crab feed back in February. I signed up not knowing anything about the company or the cause and thoroughly enjoyed my time and learning about the clients and the company itself. My job resided in helping setting up and decorating for the event. In the dining room at the Rossmor center. Highly recommend for anyone looking to gain volunteer hours and learn more about the community resources.

Choice In Aging provides services, with dignity and respect, to the elderly and frail community. I have had the pleasure of getting to know some of the participants that attend the adult day health care center and the time they spend at the center is always filled with fun and happiness. From creating arts and crafts to dancing along with the musicians that perform at the center, the participants leave with a smile on their faces at the end of the day. I've volunteered for Choice In Aging's Annual Crab Feed for two years and it's been such a fun experience. I look forward to volunteering for the upcoming Annual Crab Feed.

Choice in Aging is a much needed organization in our area. The services that are provided are vital for everyone with disabilities and special needs. As someone who has personally experienced the challenges of a parent with Alzheimer's and caregiving, I can attest to the critical support they offer. The compassion and dedication of this organization makes a profound difference in the lives of those they serve. Thank you, Choice in Aging, for your important work!

I LOVE Choice in Aging! The services they provide to and for the community are exceptional. Each and every employee and representative of Choice in Aging conveys the heart and soul of compassionate and professional attention to our aging population. I volunteered at 2 community events for Choice in Aging and if it weren't for Dara Dunn and her exceptional outreach efforts and commitment, I would not have had the amazing experience I had. To see Dara connect with the community and community partners is to see authenticity and sincerity at its best. Thank you, Choice in Aging!!!

This is an amazing non profit organization. It brings so much joy and happiness to elderly people who often find themselves alone with no one to talk to. To see them smiling, interacting with others through conversation gives them a purpose in life. Thanks to this fantastic organization for all they do for our elders

Choice in Aging gives more than a place to come sing, dance, paint and live with joy. It is a community where people gather in the Russian and Farsi/ Dari speaking programs or participate in the intergenerational activities with the onsite Montessori school. Everyone enjoys one another and develops connections with people. This is their social outlet to explore and have happiness in their life.

I have been volunteering with Choice in Aging for more than 2 years, and I love the cross-over between the Choice in Learning pre-school and Choice in Aging senior programs. The kids and adults really interact well, and learn from each other. These programs are like no other I have seen, and THAT is why I am a big supporter!

I’ve had the honor of volunteering at this wonderful organization for seven years. They provide services for the frailest members of our community with love and joy. If not for CiA, many of these participants would be siloed into nursing homes. They give dignity and independence to elders. Keep up the great work!

I’d give more than 5 stars if I could. I’ve known Choice in Aging leaders for many years. Debbie Toth has lead this agency with dignity and a drive where I say, “no one can say no to Debbie!” Her heart and drive is always about making life better for seniors and adults with disabilities. The entire staff is dedicated to the mission and just when I think they’ve done it all, there’s a new project, low income housing. I support this agency and can’t wait to see what’s next!

I have been volunteering with Choice in Aging since 2016, and continue to be amazed by Debbie and the entire team. Through their programming, they support seniors in aging with dignity in a community of their choosing. During the pandemic, they helped deliver vaccines and combat social isolation for vulnerable adults. Their passion and mission shows through in everything that they do. They are essential to helping our community thrive since we all deserve a choice in how we live our lives!

Choice in Aging has always been dedicated to making the lives of seniors and frail adults better. During the pandemic when so many were isolated, Choice in Aging made sure to stay in contact with their participants through safe visits, phone calls, ZOOM meetings and holiday celebrations. When the lifesaving vaccines became available Choice in Aging partnered with Contra Costa Health Services to deliver the vaccines to nursing homes, group homes, private residences and facilities to ensure the most vulnerable received their vaccines.
Contra Costa, Napa and Solano counties are better places because of Choice in Aging.

They have an awesome partnership with their elders and the preschool which Choice in Aging operates. This creates a loving environment and relationship both for the child and the elder. It creates purpose for the elder to be able to help a child and for the child, they develop a relationship with a grandmother/grandfather type of figure. Its a win-win!

Everyday we wake up we are offered a chance and a choice. For many of our elderly, the choices available are severely limited and seldom offers opportunity for independence and dignity. Choice in Aging provides our most fraile and elderly the option to choose how they wish to live each day. A wonderful organization whose passion to bring dignity to the voiceless permeates throughout the organization and drives decisions.

My grandfather was a client of Choice in Aging when he was experiencing dementia. He was so well taken care of when we participated. He had a noticeable spring in his step on the days he participated. I am so impressed with their vision for the Aging in Place Campus and for the countless ways that Choice in Aging took care of our region's elders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their outstanding contributions to our region are why they received the 2021 East Bay Leadership Medal. I cannot say enough good things.

I have followed the work and the growth of this nonprofit for years in a variety of roles. When I worked in the senior-serving industry I learned of their evidence based programs and the resources they provided that were unique and unduplicated by other nonprofits. I have attended many of their fundraising events as a guest. I have volunteered at some of these events and helped to plan them. And now I am a regular donor. I have heard the stories, I have seen the impact, and I will continue support Choice in Aging and the critical support services they provide in our community.

Throughout the course of the Pandemic, Choice in Aging has been a tireless advocate for our frail elders in Contra Costa County . They have been a stalwart partner to our Public Health Department to ensure that vaccines were accessible and delivered to our low-income seniors and frail elders living in the Board and Care homes throughout our county. They have literally saved countless lives in our community with their boots on the ground actions.

This nonprofit goes way beyond what might be expected of them. They are so very active in not only our County, but in the State of California on many levels. Their work goes beyond what their nonprofit is charged to do. Making sure our aging and disabled populations are a top priority for this nonprofit and all those who work/volunteer for them!!! I am impressed with how they work with state legislators to promote anything having to do with the aging and disabled populations. A very dynamic organization, I am very proud of.

Saving Adult Day Health Care at 12 Years Old.

When I was 12 years old, I went to Sacramento and testified in a Senate Budget Committee hearing about saving Adult Day Health Care. I took the day off school and my teacher was so supportive of me. When I got to the hearing room, I felt nervous because it was so big and the Senators were up high above the audience and I had to speak in a microphone for the first time. I also noticed it was being filmed for television and I got butterflies in my stomach and was sweating bullets. But I did it! I got up and spoke and I felt like they listened. I made them think. I told them I hated to think what would happen to my grandmother ,who has always supported me, if they took away adult day health care and she would go to an institution. I felt like they heard me, understood my passion on the issue and I made a difference.

Additionally, I enjoy volunteering at the adult day health center because when I work with the seniors, I can see the smiles in their eyes. Making them happy is super heart warming and I love it because they deserve that happiness. There is no greater feeling than knowing you caused someones day to be even a tad bit brighter.

Working with the Oldies

I choose to work in the nonprofit world with the aging population because they inspire me to be my absolute best! When I show up for work and walk into the congregate setting where frail elders are engaged in activities it makes my heart soar! I have learned to write grants, advocate, testify in senate and assembly hearings, write compelling letters of support, run an agency and so much more.

I give back because they gave to me. I often think of how this society turns its back on elders and it seems so sad. We always invest in our youth because they 'are the future.' Well, we were once 'the future' and were invested in by our grandparents and parents and now we are sweeping them under the rug - as a society.

I am inspired to change this each and every time I see a senior who without nonprofit programs would be in an institution. It is the smile that keeps me giving!

I volunteer my evenings and weekends to support other nonprofits, like the Food Bank and Adult Day Health programs because not everyone was born equal and those that have should give.

Are Seniors Sexy?
Sounds like a shocking question but let me explain. I work for a non-profit that has been struggling for years. We are located in Pleasant Hill, California and are a part of the very diverse Bay Area. Here at Rehabilitation Services of Northern California, we work with the frail and disabled and provide day programs for them to participate in. These day care programs help to keep these elders from being sent to a skilled nursing facility and allows them to remain in the comfort of their own home, with their dignity and independence, all while giving their caregivers respite. We have been around since 1949, and are still very unknown to our community. And this is where I answer the question above: No, seniors are not sexy. They are not an appealing demographic for the public to donate to or even pay attention to, hence the struggle to stay open and relevant.
No one wants to age, and no one thinks about what is going to happen to them when they age, but we do. We fight for rights for seniors, to ensure they are treated by our government with respect, and are able to keep their livelihood.
I will end with this question: who thinks of themselves aging, and then thinks of being sent to a nursing home?
