Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Child Abuse Prevention, Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services, Crime & Law, Domestic Violence, Human Services, Mental Health, Mental Health Treatment, Residential Care & Adult Day Programs

Mission: The Children's Receiving Home provides hope and healing for children and their families suffering the effects of abuse and neglect. The children that reside here have been abused, molested, neglected, abandoned, or have families who are otherwise unable to provide for them. The children in the program are all under the auspices of the department of health and human services and the superior court. Most are brought here by law enforcement at the request of child protective services, and for the majority of the children, it is the first time they have been removed from their homes and families. After care and services, children and youth leaving the facility may return home or they may be placed with relatives, foster homes, or other residential centers. The process of finding new homes is supported by CRH staff with pre-placement visit to ensure comfortable and smooth transitions.

Programs: Our agency is licensed annually by the state department of social services to provide care for 90 children ages 1 to 18. The Children's Receiving Home is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the admission of children and serves between 1,000 and 1,300 children each year. Children are in crisis when they are admitted to this facility, and our objective is to be as supportive and constructive as possible during their stay here. The Children's Receiving Home provides tailored 1:1 and group therapy focused on individualized mental health needs. Our medical team ensures that arrangements are made for children and youth to receive medical assessments with a pediatrician to address any possible medical concerns. Appointments are scheduled for follow up with primary care physicians, dentists, and optometrists to ensure that youth receive the best medical care while in our care. Activities & recreation are a great way to keep our kids to stay occupied in a constructive and healthy manner. Daily activities are provided on campus for different age groups. As the children's length of stay is often unknown, we attempt to take them on as many off site outings as we can. We use gift certificates to take the children skating, to basketball and baseball games, and other fun places such as Scandia, Golfland Sunsplash, roller skating and to theatre performances. In addition, we offer youth-centered, individualized, results-oriented skills training to assist emancipating foster youth on a path of successful transition from the foster care system and into adulthood.

It's hard to imagine a nonprofit in the Sacramento region doing more worthwhile and critically needed work - taking in youth who, having experienced abuse and neglect, have nowhere else to turn. CRH provides that safe place, as it has for the last 75 years. Our community is immensely better for it and I am proud to serve on its board.

The Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento fills an invaluable role in the Sacramento region by caring for hard-to-place children and teenagers who have experienced abuse, neglect and/or trauma at the hands of those who were supposed to love them the most. Given their troubled histories, these youngsters frequently exhibit difficult behaviors. CRH staff are trained to handle their behavioral and mental health issues with care and compassion, providing healing and hope. Hundreds of children and teens are served by CRH each year. Without this crucial agency, many of its teens might be living on the streets or worse. CRH, which is nationally accredited, has performed its mission with integrity, respect and understanding for 76 years in Sacramento. As an added plus, relying on a nonprofit for these vital services has saved Sacramento County millions of dollars yearly that otherwise might be required for county-run residential shelter care.

The Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento provides outstanding mental health services to youth in the Sacramento region. While primarily being viewed as the emergency shelter for Sacramento County, this 76 year old private non profit organization also provides a day treatment program for youth living at home at risk of psychiatric hospitalization and a short term residential treatment program focused on returning youth to a family based setting as quickly and safely as possible. Both of these programs have continued to provide in person, face to face services to children and their families during the current pandemic which is truly commendable. Thank you CRH for supporting the lives of so many!

Children's Receiving Home is a gold-plated community resource, caring for the region's most-vulnerable children at a critical time in their lives. Through a variety of services and treatments, CRH staff works tirelessly to help these children recover from traumatic personal crises. It's a difficult job because the youth often have suffered a lifetime of neglect and abuse. As a board member for more than a decade, I've seen this work take place and experienced, first-hand, how CRH staff and volunteers reach out and embrace these kids -- kids with no where else to go.

I was a resident here a few times in my childhood. This facility helped me heal and recover from the trauma I had endured at home. The staff treated me (us) as if I (we) were their own. There were plenty of things/ activities to keep us busy, which I really loved. I really hope to make an impact on children who have endured traumatic experiences, just like the staff here did for me.

CRH is a place for neglected and abused children within a large geographical region. I have had the opportunity to be involved with the Board of Directors and staff that care so much for these kids even when they are at their most vulnerable moments. It has proven to be a very tough environment with CRH going above and beyond to help the communities it serves.

Few nonprofits anywhere accomplish so much on behalf of abused and neglected children, and with such limited resources. Nearly 90 cents of every dollar donated to CRH goes directly to services for the children in its care. In its 75 years, the Receiving Home has served more than 75,000 Sacramento kids, wrapping them with care and services at the most traumatic times in their lives.

The company I work for has been volunteering with the Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento for years now and we have come to know the staff well. The staff and executive team put in tremendous effort to be a positive force in the lives of children when they need support and unconditional love the most, during turbulent times when they've had to be removed from their homes.
The positive impact this nonprofit has on our community is incredible. My team and I are always thrilled to be able to help such a wonderful nonprofit with an impactful mission.
