Mission:
Children’s Law Center was founded by local child advocates in 1996 on the belief that every child needs a solid foundation of family, health, and education to thrive. As the largest legal services organization in the District of Columbia and the only one to provide comprehensive support for children, we work toward this vision by providing free legal services to at-risk children and families in DC and by using what we learn from our direct representation to advocate for changes in DC’s laws and policies so that all of the city’s residents benefit.
Results: In the 18 years since its inception, Children's Law Center has helped thousands of children find or remain in long-term, stable families, overcome health problems that can be remedied by legal intervention, and receive the quality education they deserve. In the last year alone, Children’s Law Center helped more than 5,000 children and families, touching the lives of one in every eight poor children living in Wards 7 and 8.
Target demographics: Children and families in need.
Geographic areas served: District of Columbia.
Programs: Guardian Ad Litem Program: Our lawyers advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children until they find safe homes and receive the support services they need to ensure their well-being and overcome past trauma. Families First: Our lawyers help foster parents, grandparents, and other relatives who wish to adopt or obtain guardianship or legal custody of children caught in or at-risk of entering the child welfare system. We also represent the best interests of children in contentious custody cases. Healthy Together: Through our medical-legal partnership, our lawyers work side-by-side with pediatricians in clinics that treat low-income families to find legal remedies to health problems that affect children living in poverty and present ongoing obstacles to their success in school and beyond. Policy: We use what we learn from our direct services to advocate for laws, policies, and programs that improve the lives of all of DC's children.
