Mission: Children's Hospital Foundation raises funds solely for Children's Hospital Oakland. The hospital serves as the medical safety net for East Bay children and a regional and state pediatric center. The foundation's fundraising efforts aid the hospital in covering its nearly $9 million annual bill for charity care, as well as programmatic, equipment and capital needs. Gifts include individual, corporate, commemorative and memorial, in-kind, and company matching; cause marketing; corporate sponsorship, special events and community activities; donor clubs; holiday card sales; and wills and trusts.
Programs: Funds raised support the hospital's 34 medical subspecialties, including cardiology, emergency medicine, hematology and oncology, infectious diseases, neonatology, orthopaedics, surgery, and adolescent medicine. Major programs include the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, one of the nation's top ranked research centers in terms of NIH awards. Within the research institute is the largest sickle cell research program in the US. Because of basic and clinical research being performed here children with cancer and other blood disorders like sickle cell disease and thalassemia will live longer and may overcome their diseases. A new bone marrow transplant center here is large part of the solution. Additionally, Children's houses the only pediatric trauma center in Northern California, the Bay Area's only burn center, a nationally recognized craniofacial program, and one of the country's most sought after residency programs. Every year there are approximately 170,000 patient visits to the hospital. Patients come from more than 50 of California's 58 counties. Approximately 82 percent of our young patients are non-white, with the largest percentage (37%) being African American. A majority of our patients receive Medi-Cal benefits.
