Programs: Chicago symphony orchestra concerts -- during the 2016/17 season, the cso performed 156 paid and free concert programs for over 300,000 patrons. The cso premiered nine works and performed 18 for the first time. Tours included concerts in one domestic and seven foreign cities. The free concert for chicago led by maestro muti at the apostolic church of god on chicago's south side drew approximately 3,000 people. The cso celebrated sergei prokofiev's birthday by featuring a wide selection of his orchestral works, and performed all of brahms' symphonies. The orchestra performed one concert at holy name cathedral, three at wheaton college's edman memorial chapel, and will perform 16 concerts at ravinia park as part of the annual summer residency.
symphony center presents concerts -- the chicago symphony orchestra association offers concerts by acclaimed guest artists in the fields of jazz, pop, world, and classical music under the auspices of symphony center presents. Thirty-one concerts were presented during the season, with more than 75,000 tickets sold. These concerts featured established and emerging artistic leaders and musicians performing a wide variety of musical styles for diverse audiences. Scp programs include orchestra, chamber, and piano music series, and jazz at symphony center, which is one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed jazz series in the country.
education concerts and activities -- the negaunee music institute at the chicago symphony orchestra presents dozens of programs sharing music's transformative power with approximately 45,000 students and teachers, families, seniors, and underserved populations. The institute engaged children from more than 170 chicago public schools in 2016/17, and provided free tickets and transportation to concerts in schools, parks, and other community venues. A special concert for peace launched a new initiative led by music director riccardo muti and judson and joyce green creative consultant yo-yo ma that includes additional peace concerts and expanded songwriting projects for incarcerated youth.
