Mission: Founded in 1966, the Chicago Architecture Foundation is the only organization of its kind in the Chicago. CAF's mission is to advance public interest and education in architecture and related design, which is pursued through a comprehensive program of architecture tours, exhibitions, public lectures, and adult and youth education programs. CAF is a multi-faceted organization, able to serve a large public audience with its range of programs. Distinct from preservation and advocacy organizations, and museums, CAF serves the community by creating neutral, open forums to engage in dialogue about the ways in which architecture can address public concerns, and serve to create economically, socially and culturally vital and environmentally sustainable communities. The overall purpose of CAF's extensive programming is, as expressed in our mission, "to advance public interest and education in architecture and related design." By providing programming aligned with our mission, CAF shares the following benefits through its work: 1) the creation of accessible interpretation and documentation that celebrates Chicago's historic architectural achievements; 2) the fostering of an appreciation of contemporary architecture, and the raising of awareness of the ways in which contemporary architecture addresses, and responds to, community goals and needs; and 3) the education of residents and visitors about Chicago's current architectural trends, while offering comparisons with the architectural styles and policies of other major cities and countries.
