Causes: Sports, Swimming & Other Water Recreation
Mission: Chesapeake region accessible boating is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to making the thrill of sailing a reality for physically and/or developmentally-challenged individuals and for those individuals whose financial circumstances preclude their participation in recreation on the waters of the chesapeake bay.
Programs: Offered sailing opportunities to persons with disabilities, wounded warriors and local children from at-risk communities at our monthly sailfree sundays. Crab's full day sailing clinic is open to disabled individuals and their family, friends and caregivers. Participants included people from private homes, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and independent living centers for individuals with disabilities. Sailfree sundays are offered at no cost to participants. (1) took 875 guests sailing from 17 organizations serving people with disabilities. Groups participating in these private sails included the maryland school for the blind, anne arundel county public school's visually impaired program, and howard county recreation department's "endless adventures for kids with disabilities". (2) held the successful annual donald backe memorial crab cup regatta in june. This racing event, hosted by the annapolis yacht club, allowed 6 disabled sailors along with 3 able-bodied sailors to compete in the two day event. (3) the boatyard bar & grill regatta to support crab, held every august, was a big success. We had 89 boats register to race and more than 630 people came to the evening party at the eastport yacht club. Five of crab's boats raced with 5 disabled skippers/crew and 10 able-bodied volunteers. This was our most successful fundraiser to date. (4) hosted two recovering warrior sailing regattas with the united states naval academy sailing team and the national sailing hall of fame to provide a competitive regatta for 68 wounded warriors and their family members. (5) provided information and referral services on safe recreational boating with adaptive devices to dozens of individuals with disabilities. (6) scheduled private individual sails for families with disabled family members throughout the season. (7) attended events to provide information to the public about programs offered by crab, including the annapolis sailboat show and the anne arundel county disabilities awareness day. (8) held a 2-day sailing clinic for persons with spinal cord injuries. (9) held two 2-day sailing camps for children from at-risk communities with the support of county/city police. (10) 90 volunteers assisted with crab's 54 events during the year.
