Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animal Services, Animals

Mission: The mission of Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue, Inc. is the rescue of Chesapeake BayRetrievers (CBRs) and Chesapeake Bay Retriever mixes through an international, volunteer rescue network. Our network provides education and assistance to CBR owners, animal shelters, potential adopters and the general public to support training and re-homing of CBRs in need. CBRR&R Members are dedicated to finding responsible and loving homes for Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. The goal of CBRR&R is to educate the public, breeders and fanciers on responsible dog ownership. This education includes the benefits of spaying and neutering of pets, behavioral guidelines to prevent and treat problem behaviors, and to inform prospective CBR owners of the special qualities, characteristics and requirements of the breed before they acquire a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

After our Chessie litter sisters (Savannah and Maggie) passed away (very senior), we began fostering CBRs and volunteering time.

Our first foster Khoda (nee Gaston) was a stray, then pound dog, very very scared. We picked him up and he just wanted someone to cling to. Over the next few weeks of food, training and tennis balls, he was completely different. Confident and playful. He would travel in the car, go to our friends house and chill.

His prospective new hoomans loved him on sight.

What a great experience for all, but mostly for Khoda who found his loving family. We still get videos...

CBRR&R is a fantastic organization. They have regional coordinators throughout the United States and they all work together to rehome these wonderful dogs. Our rescue boy, Moose, came into our lives one year ago on July 2. He was transported from Texas by 16 wonderful people all the way to Missoula, Montana. We picked him up there and transported him home to Washington state. Whenever a Chessie is in need of medical care, transport, or a foster home, the call goes out and members/volunteers fill the need. I can't say enough good things about CBRR&R.

I am a volunteer with CBRR&R and I am constantly impressed by the organization and those that run it. Everyone who involved is extremely compassionate, responsible, and nurturing.

I strongly encourage people to adopt. CBRR&R saves a lot of dogs in need and does everything they can to prepare these dogs for the better lives they deserve.

This team is devoted to ensuring dogs of all circumstances allowing them a chance to blossom and change the lives of the people who foster and adopt them.

I have been a client that turned volunteer.

My life is full of Chessie love again thanks to CBRR&R. I fostered and adopted Stanley who LOVED to swim. Next I found my little Karma all the way from Manhattan. Oh he loved the wild Maine outdoors. And Thelma came to me from Defiance Ohio. You would not believe how many Chessie people volunteered their homes and time to hand deliver her all the way to my front door step. I have met Chessie people and their four leggeds all over the world, from the shores of Scotland, to a place I once called home: Zurich, CH. Across the United States I have chatted with Chessie peeps. I have watched their pups grow and sent love as we mourned their elder Chessies pass. We are a tight knit family brought together by our love and respect for our special breed. My life would not be the same had I not found CBRR&R online.

My Hunter was lonely after his big sister Dancer passed. There was a opportunity to foster a lovely old girl whose owner had passed. She has only 1 eye and the other doesn't have much sight, but she is very welcome here and we love her

I have been involved with CBRR&R for many years as a volunteer and as an adopter of a Chessie. These dedicated folks give 110% for every CBR that comes into rescue. All aspects of the organization are handled in a very professional manner. Great people, great organization, for GREAT DOGS!

Have been involved with the organization a little over a year now as a client and a volunteer. Technically it has been longer vicariously through another volunteer. We've rescued two Chessies, one indirectly and one directly through the CBRR&R. The volunteers that run the organization are great people, passionate, and work hard to make sure CBR rescues are paired up with capable, loving families.

Thanks to Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue,I have fostered and owned six chessies - all very loving and all very loved. First there was Mick, an older boy who had a huge tumor on his side, which the rescue had removed. Then there was Briones who unfortunately had DM After that came Zuni, a rambunctious pup who lived 14 years, and then Meg joined our family. Then I fostered Hannah, aka: Lucy, who found a wonderful home. Last, but not least, Sierra arrived. Five of these dogs came from shelters and all were transported to me from various locations.:Northern California, San Diego County and Chicago. I don't think there are many rescues who will transport long-distance ! I will be forever grateful to the rescue for trusting me to foster. These dogs enriched my life more than I can say.

I have first-hand experience with this non-profit, as we adopted our amazing dog (Sheriff) via Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue Inc. Three factors make this a standout organization: 1) EXTRAORDINARY COMMUNICATION: CBRR&R is tireless in its promotion of adoptable dogs at each step in a dog's journey from rescue, to recovery, to placement. This allows optimum opportunity for potential adoptive families to become familiar with (and possibly fall in love with) a new family member; 2) RELENTLESS RESOURCEFULNESS: CBRR&R partners with incredible community resources (including pilots who transport dogs to new homes, veterinary clinics who provide surgical support and care to injured or sick dogs, and key foster homes throughout the United States). Because CBRR&R treats its partners with such respect and gratitude, they have an exceptionally strong network of longtime partners and resources; and 3) THOROUGH EVALUATION: As we went through the process of adopting Sheriff, we saw firsthand how thorough CBRR&R is in the evaluation of potential adoptive families -- they 'walk the talk' when it comes to ensuring each dog is placed in a family that is prepared love, care for, and meet that dog's individual needs for the rest of its life. The process includes interviews and in-home visits to evaluate a dog's environment. The results of this match-up process are evident in countless Facebook posts that show how the dogs blossom in their new homes after adoption. Many of the stories of these dogs are posted years (if not decades) following the dog's adoption, which is inspirational proof that CBRR&R is expert in the field of legwork for adoption placement. In sum, we can't say enough good about this organization; we love Sheriff dearly and (because of him) we now love this non-profit, as well. We are very proud to be contributors and supporters of CBRR&R!

I have volunteered with this rescue for over 4 years and I have seen the most extraordinary level of dedication, love and commitment to saving the lives of these special dogs. Heroic efforts to transport dogs across the county, providing medical care, support of the families involved with fostering and nursing heart worm positive dogs back to health. You name it, they have done it.
I'm very proud to volunteer with Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue.

My photos are of Jake, super rescue dog!
