Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Congregate Meals, Food, Human Services, Meals on Wheels, Senior Centers, Seniors
Mission: The Chatham county council on aging was founded on July 8, 1974, as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing programs and services to the older population of Chatham County. The Council promotes and supports independent living, and the physical and mental wellness of persons aged 60 and older through a wide range of services that includes Meals on Wheels, in-home personal care, transportation, information assistance and options counseling, minor home repair, mobility and assistive equipment loan, and senior center programming. The Council also supports family caregivers of elderly striving to remain living at home. In partnership with many other community organizations, the Council is raising awareness about the aging of Chatham's growing population and encouraging efforts to assure that Chatham remains an age-friendly community where there are opportunities for social and civic engagement, continuous learning, fitness, and an appreciation for the life accomplishments of older adults.
Target demographics: promote independent living and a mental and physical well being.
Geographic areas served: providing programs and services to Chatham County seniors.
Programs: The Information & Options Counseling program helps older adults and their families understand and access available services and support, and to consider their options for care. Staff help coordinate care and follow up with seniors to ensure client's needs are being met. The In-home Aide Service program provides nursing assistants to assist with personal care, perform in-home tasks and meal preparation at no cost to eligible seniors (contributions are welcomed). Personal care and respite services were provided to more than 80 seniors. The Congregate Meal Program provides a healthy lunch daily at two locations in Chatham County; Eastern Chatham Senior Center (Pittsboro) and Western Chatham Senior Center (Siler City.) Meals on Wheels provides noon-time meals delivered to seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals. Volunteers delivered approximately 20,000 hot and frozen during the year. Other services: senior transportation services to and from the senior centers; senior center operations; activities; wellness and health; minor home repair; assistive equipment loans, medical transportation; and senior companion/sitter list, caregiver support programs.
