Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The housing opportunity foundation (foundation) is the charitable arm of the charlotte regional realtor(r) association and actively promotes housing through funding, education, advocacy and leadership initiatives.

Programs: Realtors(r) care day(r) is an annual community service project coordinated by the foundation where more than 600 realtor(r) volunteers worked to provide critical exterior home repairs for 17 homes in mecklenburg and iredell counties on april 11, 2014. The foundation works with local housing non-profits to identify eligible homeowners who then go through a detailed application and verification process. Since its inception six years ago, this project has assisted 146 families.

the foundation contributed to local nonprofit organizations whose purpose is addressing affordable workforce housing in the greater charlotte area through its three grant programs. 1) habitat support program ($13,500) - 9 area habitat for humanity organizations were granted restricted programming support to continue their work on behalf of affordable housing. 2) community grants program ($20,000) - 10 nonprofit organizations were granted restricted program support to address unmet housing needs. 3) humanitarian award ($1,000) - one individual was recognized for his significant humanitarian efforts in the community and a nonprofit organization of his choice was subsequently awarded funds in his honor. In addition, special appropriations were given to two non-profit initiatives whose purpose was in alignment with that of the foundation mission; these appropriations, approved by the board of directors, totaled $5,500.

the foundation provides various educational programs. The workforce housing certificate program (whcp) educates realtors(r) to work with first-time buyers and clients purchasing in the affordable price range (up to 80% of median income) and helps the public more readily identify realtors(r) who have acquired the education and skills to conduct real estate transactions in the workforce-housing market. The workforce housing fair/neighborhood showcase, which took the form of two affordable housing bus tours in 2014, is held with the intent of introducing realtors(r) to affordable housing options/neighborhoods, providing learning information on down-payment assistance, and allowing for networking opportunities with local lenders and community/industry leaders.
