Causes: Crime & Law, Inmate Support
Mission: Changed Choices exists so that women who have experienced incarceration lead restored lives marked by healthy decisions, self-sufficiency, and contribution to their communities. As followers of Christ, we empower current and recently incarcerated women to achieve lasting, positive change through programming and personalized mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual support.
Results: Over the course of our 20+ year history, Changed Choices has served hundreds of women through our Client programming and instructional programming at Mecklenburg County Detention Center.
Target demographics: women impacted by incarceration
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 75 women impacted by incarceration
Geographic areas served: Mecklenburg and surrounding counties
Programs: Our Changed Choices client programming is a five year investment in the lives of women impacted by incarceration. Quarterly, our staff and admissions committee review applications submitted by women throughout the justice system ready for a different path forward. Once admitted as a client, each woman works with our Pre-Release Manager to create a personalized Vision Plan including goals and action steps that focus on mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Goals are tracked through monthly check-ins. In addition, our Pre-Release programming focuses on six topics including identity, purpose, grief, foundations of faith, boundaries, and soul care. During the year before release, our Pre-Release Manager, Spiritual Care Manager, and Re-Entry Manager work together to identify key resources and client needs including connecting women to local houses of worship based on a client's preferences, identify housing options including our Re-Entry Home, and resources and information about our Re-Entry program. Once released, clients work with our Re-Entry Manager to address immediate needs and long term goals including identification needed for job and rental applications, setting up checking accounts and financial planning, coaching focused on a client's strengths, goals and Vision Plan, and connections to counseling resources.
