Causes: Education, Family Services, Food, Food Banks & Pantries, Human Services, International, International Migration & Refugee Issues

Mission: The Chaldean American Ladies of Charity (CALC) was founded in 1961 by 20 women from refugee and immigrant households seeking to support other new Americans in rebuilding their lives. CALC has since grown from an all-volunteer agency into a robust organization providing wrap-around social services. In 2016, the Board adopted the name United Community Family Services (UCFS) to represent our goal of supporting the broader community as a whole. Over 60 years since its founding, UCFS continues to carry out its mission of providing programs that guide, support, and empower individuals to achieve self-sufficiency with dignity and hope.

I’ve been blessed to be able to volunteer with CALC/UCFS for over 20 years. The clients we’ve been able to assist over the years has truly been rewarding. The UCFS team is dedicated to ensuring everyone who walks through their doors is served with empathy and dignity.
Not only has the organization made a difference in my life as a volunteer but I’ve seen the impact their made on the clients lives!

My family immigrated to the United States as refugees two weeks before my 8th birthday. It is a difficult journey to flee your home and move to a new place where you do not know the language or culture, on top of having very limited resources. It is even more difficult to raise four young children on this journey. Although, my parents excelled, I wish we had access to the resources UCFS/CALC provides, especially the youth programs, like Project Achievement.

The organization gives individuals and families a big hug of resources, opportunity, and support on their unique journey in a special way curated to their needs, with dignity and hope. From the food pantry, furniture donations, and clothing to immigration services, maternal health education, and financial assistance.

Through my involvement in the organization and the work we do, I know I am living to the promise I made to my younger self — to be who I and my family needed on our journey in a new country.

Thank you UCFS/CALC in all that you do!

I have been volunteering with this wonderful organization for many years. They provide services that support their mission of assisting those in need and helping their clients working toward self-sufficiency. They assist with basic needs (food, clothing, furniture, etc.) and offer programs that help individuals obtain further education and employment so that they can ultimately be self-sufficient. They assist people of all ages—from children to elderly. Both the staff and volunteers are a dedicated team and passionate about the work.

CALC is made up of some of the warmest, most dedicated individuals you’ll ever meet. Everyone you interact with has it on their heart to serve those in need and it is fully on display through their effort, generosity, and enthusiasm.

I’m not only a donor, but also a volunteer with the Project Achievement initiative which focuses on tutoring and enabling underserved children in the area. We help these children with challenging homework from school, but also provide them with extracurricular work to hone their reading, math and science knowledge.

Megan, the lead on the initiative, is one of the most loving, thoughtful, and caring individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. She meticulously crafts the assignments, projects and activities for the children on a weekly basis. She also ensures that every dollar put in the program is used economically to generate the greatest impact. Simply put, she cares deeply about the success of these children.

I would not hesitate to recommend CALC to anyone looking to make an impact on the lives of struggling families in our community.
