Diana, I don't have anything to do with this organization, actually, I don't even live in Maryland, but I am concerned by your comment. With no doubt, you need some general enlightenment: a nonprofit can charge for services provided, receive donations, etc. That doesn't mean they are making a profit... they may use their funds in order to support their cause. Besides, they may have salaries to pay, electricity and so on.
That the "nonprofit" denomination in this country is really tricky (I am Italian), I completely agree with you, however, there are such organizations like GOODWILL, that you don't want to know how much they share between executives... A LOT! But you have others like CAUSA Hispana, that is handled by all volunteers and their ratio donations to help is over 107%.
I hope this clarifies your uncertainty...

I would like to mention something that is confusing me. Is the Centro Hispano a for non-profit institution??My understanding is that they receive voluntary donations from the people they help.
I approached them looking for assistance to obtain the Maryland Driver License. They were so helpful, and directed me in the steps needed. One of the steps is to have my taxes done for at least two years, something that they also have the service for, to my surprise, the tax preparation service has a fee equal to any tax preparation office if no higher. My question is: Where are these funds going? Is it correct to use a government supported facility to make a business profit ?
