I have spent a lifetime around horses; and well understand the realities of surplus unwanted horses and marginally qualified owners who make poor choices and can no longer care for their charges. I have witnessed many well-intentioned folks try to "rescue" horses and end up in unsustainable situations which further hurt the horses. These life experiences have made my interactions with CVHR all the more remarkable, What Cindy Smith, her volunteers and supporters have accomplished is to build a professional, sustainable and effective rescue network here in Virginia. The horses they are able to accept are carefully brought back to their maximum potential for quality of life. They are assessed and worked with to give them the maximum life skills to ensure they can have happy and fulfilling lives. They are then matched up with carefully screened adopters who will be able to go the distance and provide for the horses' well-being permanently. The CVHR professionalism and knowledge into the ways of business and horses is exceeded only by their passion and boundless energy to serve those horses that are most at risk. Our interactions with CVHR and Cindy Smith have been wholly positive, there can be no higher standard of conduct than that displayed by this organization. I am blessed to have found CVHR, and my life is richer for having adopted one of their wonderful rescues several years back. Together we can all make a difference.
I found my unicorn at Central Virginia Horse Rescue. This rescue is great, and very knowledgeable. I was looking for my first horse. I had a list of potential horses from the website. Cindy helped us narrow it down. We met Dusty, and the rest was history. He is our forever horse.
I was looking for a second horse as I was finally getting my life long dream of horses at my house. I went to a local "horse rescue" and I noticed quickly they did not have my or the animals they were fostering best interest at heart. I left sad and banged up from a terrible trial. I was at my tack store where the recommended Central Virginia Horse Rescue. I put in my application without a horse selection and asked them to choose for me based on my ability and land. I drove 100 miles to meet Cindy and the horses. Within 5 minutes she told me who she chose for me. 15.3 hands of goofy Missouri Fox Trotter! He has helped me so much with my anxiety riding. He is patient and forgiving! Cindy has a great ability to match people with animals. I would totally get another horse when the time comes from CVHR. I am happy to be part of their adoptive family!
I have been following CVHR for about 3 years now. The amazing work they do for horses, minis & mules is miraculous. Cindy does an amazing job bringing horses back to a healthy weight. CVHR ensures each adoption is the right fit for both horse and family.
CVHR is hands down the best horse Rescue there is. I got my big old baby, Indy, from them 3 years ago and I couldn’t be more blessed! They take in horses from so many horrible backgrounds and make them blossom. They give their horses the absolute best care and best attention there is. I love them so much :)
I LOVE This Horse Rescue!! CVHR ... I have been acquainted with this non-profit for about 6 years and find them the most caring, the most knowledgeable, the most transparent & honest financially, and the most dedicated to each horse they save. The animals get complete check-up care upon entry from the Vet, the Dentist, the Farrier and the nutritionist. They are given all the time they need to be allowed to heal and are gently appraised as they begin to get better. The adoption application to be a new home for one of their horses, mules, donkeys, minis is thorough and they really check prospective homes OUT! They make the calls to references and visit. They keep up with their critters. They willingly take adoptees back when theres issues.. Cindy, Randy and the staff of CVHR LOVE what they do and it shows!! I adopted my Donkey "Sirbeside" from CVHR who is a beloved babysitter to foals that are alone... what a character & centurion he is.. I highly recommend this group (Central Virginia Horse Rescue) as one of the most an outstanding Horse rescues in the United States.
There is are not enough words to tell the Peeps about the wonders of Cindy & Randy @ CVHR . They LIVE & LOVE & EAT & SLEEP Horse Rescue. Their transparent dedication is beyond description. Every horse in their care is special...every horse in their care gets treated to lovin' spa days, an individual diet, exercise, veterinary & farrier & dentist, and given EVERY chance for a second career or family. Each Rescued Horse is given the opportunity "to be a horse" and have the freedom to discover their snug haven. New owners are screened & scrutinized to insure the safety of the animal and in the event that things don't work out... CVHR takes them back. Cindy, if you meet her or know her, has a fantastic practical loving nature that is interwoven with humor. She can "tell you like it IS" and then make you laugh. She knows her stuff and works tirelessly to save Horses. I recommend this Nonprofit with every ounce of me.
3 THUMBS UP !!
I keep up with this great on Facebook. They are a caring, hard working organization helping these horses to get a forever home.
Well my daughter had been watching videos on horses on youtube, and she wanted one of her own. So I looked around our area and found CVHR. I contacted Cindy and told her my daughter's plan. Well we started going to rescue every weekend working and interacting with the horses. Cindy (the owner) was great. She showed us everything we needed to know, what needed to be done and what Not to do. We watched a number of horses go from skin and bones to full fledged healthy beautiful animals. All because of what CVHR does for these animals. I regularly follow the rescue on social media. We now have 2 of our own horses. All thanks to CVHR
Central Virginia Horse Rescue does much needed and valuable work in saving horses-we are very thankful that someone is there for horses in difficult situations who need help. They always go the extra mile, whether for veterinary care, training, and eventual rehoming of these wonderful and very deserving horses.
Such an amazing group. What they do is not an easy task, physically or emotionally, and I am not sure I could do it. I wish I loved closer as I would be there every day after work.
Amazing wonderful angels! So grateful for what they do every single day...takes perserverence, bravery and guts to do what they do and stick with it! Amazing rescue!!
I recently adopted a horse from this group. They were very prompt and efficient with the adoption process. They were very thorough with making sure the horse was going to someone that could and would take care of it.I am so impressed with the good work these people do.Thank God groups like this exist. They really put lots of time and money into each and every horse. They need help to accomplish all this.Sincerely, Dina Honeycutt
Impressed with the care, communication and rapid response. Advises of concerning situations during resolution.
I often follow their good works and amazing transformations with the horses. So glad they are able to rehabilitate and re home so many.
CVHR is the model equine rescue. Led by Cindy Smith, who works tirelessly to not only save so very many horses in need, but rehabilitates so very many of them. Many of these horses go on to new loving homes because of what CVHR does. My daughter works at a horse rescue and tries to implement many of the strategies used at CVHR from fun rasing to refeeding to training. An awesome rescue run by an awesome lady and her staff and volunteers!
I have talked to a couple of the people that run the rescue and they are all the nicest people and truly care about all the animals, a lot of my friends adopt from them and I plan on using them when I get another horse
This is a rescue you can not only trust, but then want to stand behind and support any way you can, even after adopting one of their horses! Ask any questions, go visit, they are as accommodating as they can be within realistic expectations. I love Cindy and all she does for the animals in her care. Fantastic work. Very highly recommended!
CVHR is a wonderful rescue that takes great pride in caring for the animals they rescue. I had the pleasure to volunteer with my daughter and a friend today. Not only was it very rewarding, but also a great learning experience. I look forward to helping out again and hearing about the great adoption stories for each of the animals.
Cindy does a wonderful job of keeping the horse first. It is all about the horse and for the horse. She is positive, informative, communicates with everyone. I have learned much from her concerning horses and the horse world. She has her values and sticks to them. She is one fantastic person. I especially appreciate the fact of keeping the bashers silent. More information will flow if people are not afraid to share. Cindy encourages this. I like the way she works with the horses in public to increase her adoption rate. This shelter is an excellent resource for anyone even thinking about getting involved in the rescue business.
I am both a volunteer and a donor for this wonderful rescue. I first became aware of CVHR and its founder, Cindy Smith, while working with an online rescue organization dedicated to finding second chance homes for auction horses that did not sell through the ring. CVHR would raise money for and pull the most difficult horses to find homes for, the ones with training or physical issues that just sat in the kill pen. As the Rescue was not too far from me, I drove down for their third anniversary party to see for myself how it was run before committing money to it. What I saw was a place of love where every equine was treasured and cared for. Some were permanent residents due to factors that either made them difficult to adopt out, or were complicated to deal with, so Cindy kept them herself to ensure their care and happiness. I was impressed with Cindy and her volunteers then, and have only become more so over the ensuing two plus years. Cindy runs CVHR with business acumen coupled with love and compassion, a tough combination to beat. She has taken in so many horses at death's door and brought them back that it seems routine, but it is most assuredly not. Her "miracles" are the product of her deep knowledge of horses, a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers, and her love and determination to save every horse that comes through her gate.
Cindy just opened a new facility near Kenbridge, VA in a carefully considered and managed expansion which will enable her to do more community outreach as well as help more horses. It is called Miracle Meadows, and it couldn't be more aptly named.
Year after year, I am so impressed with CVHR. Cindy and the rest of the volunteers work so hard to do the good work. There are so many stories created at this magical place and so many horses we will never forget. It warms my heart to see the many success stories coming from this rescue, which wouldn't be possible without the dedication and teamwork found at CVHR. It truly takes a village to run a rescue and every single person involved, each donor, supporter, volunteer and board member is essential to success. CVHR is professionally run and managed and is growing each year. I am proud to help in the small way that I am able. :) A big thank you goes out to Cindy and all of the amazing volunteers, supporters, and donors that have worked together to make happy endings for the horses! It is often thankless work and I want everyone to know that CVHR is making a difference. Thank you!
CVHR is my absolute favorite organization. They do a fabulous job saving horses from all walks of life; stepping in when necessary for owner surrenders, AC seizures, auction horses, and even by sending grants to horse owners in short-term crises. CVHR is transparent--you can really see how your donations are put straight into the rescue and how you help them help the horses! Over the years CVHR has grown from a small rescue to a successful organization at multiple locations. Of course, all of this is only possible with the continued support of our dedicated volunteers and wonderful supporters.
Throughout the years, I have helped CVHR as a volunteer by writing their monthly newsletter, donating items for auctions, raising funds with bake sales, and putting jars out at the feed store to collect donations. "Every little bit helps," has been my mantra when working towards helping this amazing rescue move onward and upward in the world! CVHR is by far the best organization I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
We have 2 adopted equines from Central Virginia Horse Rescue. Cindy is giving of everything she has to save as many equines as she can manage. And she is always taking "one" more even when she is not certain she has the time or space. She always makes it work. We love our pony "Miss Halley" and our donkey "Mr. Merlin" aka "Fireball." They both have been awesome additions to our family. We love them both dearly. Thank you Cindy for giving both of them a second/third/fourth chance!
If I had more space I would adopt another rescued horse or pony from CVHR.
We adopted a pony and donkey from Central Virginia Horse Rescue. We love our pony, Halley. She had been abused in the past and is very scared of adults. The rescue was not certain she would do well in a home with small children. We drove to the rescue to meet Halley and we were happily surprised that she took to all my girls. We have had Halley for almost a year now and she is doing remarkably well in our home. CVHR makes sure all rescues go to the best homes for that particular horse/pony. They are are great nonprofit and very deserving of status as a GREAT nonprofit.
CVHR is dedicated to the rescue of equines. Take a moment to see all the critters in their rescue. You will find mules, mini horses, ponies and horses. This rescue is dedicated to the rescue of horses but they want turn away a Jack or Jenny :-). Vet bills grow quickly with healthy horses. Vet bills become mountains when dealing with starved , abandoned and abused horses. Feed/hay for one healthy horse is approximately $50 a month and thats a healthy a horse. Rehabilitation of one horse the cost of feed alone could easily be 5x this.
Horse rescue is expensive and takes heart. This group has lots of heart . Donations keep them in feed, supplies and vetting. Please donate today!!
Central Virginia Horse Rescue is a wonderful non-profit that helps many different kinds of horses that might otherwise go to slaughter or be euthanized. My husband and I have been following the rescue on Facebook for years, have been to the farm several times, and have had nothing but wonderful, warm and professional interactions with the director, Cindy Smith, and the volunteers. We donate and we have adopted from them and considered several other horses for adoption. Ms. Smith is a sharp business woman who makes tough decisions about which horses she can truly help and which she must turn away. It is heartbreaking, but she does it for the greater good of the ones that can find a future in another home. She has a crack team of caretakers with the vets and farriers she uses. We cannot say enough good things about what a wonderful job this organization does to help many horses recover and find forever homes while being fiscally responsible, even when often they are pretty much forced to take animals that law enforcement brings them. Please consider donating to them.
I have been following Central Virginia Horse Rescue on Facebook for about two years. After watching the activities vicariously for that length of time, it became obvious to my husband and me--who are both lifetime horse people--that the director, Cindy Smith, was not only a sharp horsewoman with a big heart, but also a careful and responsible financial manager. After watching numerous horses truly brought back from the brink of death to excellent health, and watching the same horses receive care and training entirely appropriate to their ages and abilities, it was an easy choice to decide to horse shop at CVHR when we had the need for a new horse. It seemed odd to us that even though we had both adopted many dogs from shelters that neither of us had even known about horse adoptions until we found CVHR. We are now preparing to acquire another horse and our first thought was to check out the "Available for Adoption" page at CVHR to see if any of these horses fit our needs. I applaud Cindy and her volunteers for their devotion to each horse that they take in and care for. This is a rescue with a long-range business plan that makes sense as well as the knowledge and the good common sense to make sure everything is done well.
CVHR is a very efficiently run rescue. Their passionate leader, Cindy, is tirelessly working to not only rescue but to rehab and place horses. The volunteers are also amazing in stepping in and helping as needed.
I admire CVHR so much because there is no discrimination. Any horse, pony, or breed is welcome. And they take on some tough cases. Plus they don't give up. My heart goes out to them.
My all time, one and only, love of my life favorite rescue! If you have even a dollar and want some good karma in the bank, this rescue has my heart. Transparent, honest, trustworthy and welcoming. Horses are well evaluated , trained, and/ or rehabbed before being carefully and lovingly placed. As a supporter, visitor and adopter, I can not say enough good things about Central Virginia Horse Rescue and the entire team.
Love, love, love CVHR! Everything is run the right way, donations go where they are needed and progress is always shared with us supporters! Loads of pictures and updates- you never wonder where your donations go. Upfront and honest, CVHR has saved so many lives and found wonderful homes for so many equines. Advice is always given, questions are always answered and input is always welcome.
Having been lucky enough to visit, I can honestly say it's a well run, organized, safe rescue and the horses all look fantastic.
Rescue done right. Every day! Keep up the great work, Cindy and crew!
I hate seeing great horses being thrown away (so to speak). No horse deserves being tossed when they have so much to give and can help train a rider or give someone therapy that they need. No horse should be starved or beaten half to death by non-responsible owners. I love CVHR because they have faith in every horse they rescue. They have patience, wisdom and love in doing what ever they can to help heal a horse physically and mentally. I feel like they deserve it. Thank you Cindy and staff of volunteers for all your hard work and dedication!
I have been a volunteer at CVHR since 2010 and have adopted two incredible horses from there. They do the very best they can for every horse that they rescue ...getting veterinary care, special feed if needed and being available 24/7 for the horses needs. They aren't afraid to make the hard calls (although it will break their hearts ) but will not allow any horse to suffer when no hope is left. They are an outstanding organization !!
I've been volunteering for Central Virginia Horse Rescue for 2+ years and adopted our 2 horses from them also. They will do almost anything to help a horse in need. I have seen totally emaciated horses be brought back to health and ultimately adopted into good, approved homes.
Cindy Smith, the executive director, is willing to do almost anything to help horses...including exhausting all their savings. She spends all her waking time either working with the horses, trying to raise funds for animals surgeries or food or trying to coordinate with other people agencies to find horses (any equines ) homes.

Jo-Ann, it has actually been 4 years. Our babies like Frodo have grown up and are going to college now and learning to be good equine citizens. And who would have thought that it would have started with story time. Thank you for helping out here.
Its very easy to donate to CVHR and know exactly where the funds are going. Cindy & the volunteers do a great job with the animals and the farm
A marvelous organization that does work that, at times, seems almost impossible. Having known Cindy for quite some time, I know how dear this dream was for her and how truly passionate she is about these glorious animals. She has truly committed her life to this vision and I have unending respect and pride at the success they have achieved. The values and integrity that she, and by extension the entire organization, brings are incredible and my only wish is that we had more we could provide.
Scott purdum of advantage horsemanship had sexual relations with my wife, his student, in his horse trailer while his pregnant wife slept next door. Keep your wives and daughters away from this degenerate.
Cindy At C. 12/27/2014
I am extremely sorry that you have had an issue with Mr. Purdum and Advantage Horsemanship but I don't see how that reflects on Central Virginia Horse Rescue. Mr. Purdum is one of several trainers that we have hired over the years and he has done an excellent job of helping our horses which is what our concern is.
I adopted my sweet Standie from CVHR. She went from harness racing to broad mare to Amish to Camelot. I am so grateful they rescued her! They do amazing work! My daughter and I donate regularly to CVHR so they can continue their rescues.
I adopted a sweet wonderful standardbred retired race horse from them back in Feb 2013. CVHR does such a wonderful job with taking care of their horses. They are just incredible. They rescue horses, ponies, mules, and more! I'm so glad that I got my gal from them. We both have been blessed by CVHR!
I met Cindy, before she started her rescue. I purchased a horse from her, from just talking to her on the phone. She was very honest, with everything she told me about the horse, and even delivered him to me. I have been following her rescue from the start. I am amazed at the work she has done and continues to do. She has over 20,000 likes in 4 years, and a lot of the other rescues take 10 years to get that many. That should tell you she is a good person, and runs a great rescue. I don't have a lot of money to donate, but I do love her sweatshirts and tee shirts, and I buy them and support her. I have learned a lot from following her as she always puts out very useful information on horses. Everyone is put on this earth for something, and this is her calling. I wish her all the luck in the years to come. I bless all of her volunteer's as I know how hard they all work. I hope she can get her farm, so she can continue to save horses. and place them in forever homes. She is my number one horse rescue. God Bless!!!
We have been donating to CVHR for a couple of years and will continue to do so. When they intake a new horse they evaluate what the needs are for this particular animal and work to achieve those goals so that the horse can become adoptable into a new and loving family. We feel that CVHR is a very deserving Rescue. Cindy and the volunteers are all amazing and have helped so many.
With Central Virginia Horse Rescue you see exactly where your donations are going. They will ask for help with "bail" and transport for Auction horse or with other horses in dire need. They also share out with other rescues. Which I think is in the True Spirit of Rescues. It is not the Rescues in need it is he Animals that are in Need. These animals have trusted people and ended up being starved and hurt and cast out. Thanks You to Cindy and all the Volunteers for all that they do help these Horses.
Equine Welfare Society collaborates with CVHR to help give unwanted horses the health and skills needed to find new homes and happiness. Cindy and her staff have been nothing short of amazing. Most refreshing and encouraging is that they support and encourage fellow rescue organizations to work together for the welfare of horses. Thank you!!
I have been following and donating to CVHR for several years now. Although I have not yet had the opportunity to meet Cindy, or visit the rescue in person, seeing the wonderful care given to many unfortunate horses, donkeys, etc. really touches my heart. With the knowledge and networking they do at CHVR, many other rescue organizations could learn allot from them. CVHR keeps its followers and financial supporters updated with great pictures and bios on its website and Facebook. Its always so very sad to see these horses come to the rescue pretty much starving to death...to see them come along their journey at CVHR...gaining weight, being loved, trained and valued as we are meant to do is heartwarming to say the least! I hope someday to adopt our next horse from CVHR. They do an excellent job!
I first learned about CVHR in early 2013 when we moved to Spotsylvania, Va and bought our "dream retirement" farm. I have always had a soft spot for animals in need and I knew I wanted my first experience as a horse owner to be with a rescue horse/pony. I originally contacted CVHR regarding Bogey, and Cindy arranged for me to come have a visit to meet him. Cindy was wonderful when I arrived at the rescue with my two kids, 1 other child who was visiting with us and one of my rescue pups I brought back from the streets of Italy. Looking back, I realize this was not the ideal way to meet a horse and have a conversation with Cindy about horse ownership; I am certain she was fairly concerned that I brought along so many little bodies with me, BUT she still made me feel welcome. She allowed me to visit with Bogey and understand my own comfort level with him while we talked. Although I decided I was not ready for him at that point (because I was completely green as a horse owner), she understatedly allowed me to come to this decision on my own. I am sure she was thinking the same thing about my greenness and how nervous I was around him. But, I took this experience and and over the past year I have gained so much confidence around horses by observing others, listening to experienced horse people, taking riding lessons with my daughter with a professional trainer, and reading/watching videos about horse care and training. Through this learning process we did end up adopting a rescue pony from a wonderful woman who rescued him and who supports local rescues and after a month of having him, the same woman helped me find my Haflinger mare who needed a home (who I am completely in love with). This past year has been one of the most wonderful learning experiences of my life and we are now a confident horse family. Our little rescue boy has his own professional pony trainer who is working wonders with him under saddle. He now has a plan for his future and it has been so great to see him find his potential. I have CVHR to thank for our success and happiness on this journey just by staying abreast of their updates and information on their website and their Facebook page I become more educated on a daily basis. We definitely have room for 1 (or maybe 2:)) more horses on our farm in the future and regardless if the horse comes directly from CVHR, they do influence our choices. I really appreciate the helpful links, shares and amazing work Cindy and all of her volunteers do tirelessly. Simply amazing the work they do.
Found CVHR through Facebook and have been following their posts ever since. They sometimes rescue horses from Camelot which I am familiar with. I have the utmost respect for everyone at this organization. It brightens my day to see via their pictures and posts what they do day in and day out to help equines in need. You can tell they are extremely transparent in everything they do and their love for these animals is evident. This is one rescue organization that I would donate to time and time again without hesitation. If I lived close by, I would be there every day to lend a hand and do whatever needed to be done. It would be a pleasure to work beside them to accomplish the amazing things that they do for these wonderful animals in need.
I found CVHR on FB one day and I have been hooked ever since. My daughter and I volunteer, when we can, to help with the horses. I am very amazed at all of the horses that CVHR has helped in the few years I have known them. I think they give an excellent opportunity to many horses that would have been passed by. So many of their rescues just needed a soft place to land to recover from what life has dealt them, and they have gone on to be fantastic pets and companions. Many have moved on to have great jobs as riding/trail buddies. I love the opportunity to help. They keep everyone up to date on the progress through FB and their web site. I do not think there is a more devoted group of people in the area...
Central Virginia Horse Rescue is an amazing nonprofit! they help as many horses as they can financially afford to. They rescue and rehabilitate horses that would otherwise not find a home and they find it a great one. The staff is so caring and helpful they go the extra mile to make sure the horses they rescue end up in a forever home. I just Love them!!!
CVHR is one of the few rescues who go above and beyond for each horse they take in.
They not only rehabilitate , they nurture and retrain each case according to that horses
needs. I only hope they can continue to get the support to continue to save horses and be able
to make a difference in their lives. I also adopted a horse thru them and his story was he needed $7,000.00 + in medical care, and he received it. Fabulous rescue.
I had a great experience adopting from CVHR. They made the whole process easy, they did do their check on references, which they should. Cindy was honest and always in contact with me. Emailed me right back. They took care of everything on their end as far as making sure the horse was ready for transport since we were a few states away.

CVHR is truly a remarkable place! I see pictures of all these sad horses that need help so bad and if they don't get the help they need, they will die. This organization is the BEST in my opinion. Just look at pictures of before and after and you can see what super care and concern and love all of the horses get. This place deserves every donation possible so they can continue to carry on and save more horses. I send donations when I can and I think every cent is put to great use. It makes my day so much better seeing all the updates on progress these horses are making, please help them carry on!!
I first saw this group on Facebook through a friend. In the nearly two years since, I have been to visit twice and seen with my own eyes the miracles they perform on a daily basis, transforming starved and neglected horses inside and out into the beautiful beings they were meant to be. I donate and have also volunteered with them when I can. I truly believe in Cindy Smith, her team of volunteers, and their mission to rescue and find safe homes for horses in need. Truly angels on Earth!
II have been volunteering at CVHR for over 2 years now and it has been an extremely rewarding way to spend my time. Horses in desperate need of help come and blossom into wonderful, healthy, well-behaved animals.
And it isn't just the horses who benefit. Everyone that spends time at the rescue is welcomed to watch, to help, to learn- it is a great experience for everyone, from longtime horse owners to the children that come to camp and experience their first sight of a horse... or their first lesson in grooming.
I started volunteering at Central Virginia Horse Rescue nearly a year ago. At the time I had little knowledge or hands-on training around horses. Not only has the Rescue taught me how to act around horses, how to understand them and care for them correctly, it has shown me what good can happen when someone is truly devoted to a cause. Every donation goes toward the care of the horses and these animals can remember that life is wonderful and that people can be trusted.
I like to take my 4H club over to the rescue to see what happens to horses when people have no follow through. They get a good healthy dose or reality and it makes them strive to take the best care of their equines and if they need help not to feel bad about asking. Teaching our youth at a fairly young age the reality of the horse situation makes them better advocates in the future. So thanks Cindy and CVHR for driving home the point everytime I bring new kid's over it's working I see it in their presentation topics and what they want to do as they move on through the club. They will always get a non sugar coated answer when they ask questions and they love to come over and do chores to help out around the rescue be it grooming, bathing, cleaning stalls or water tubs we are so fortunate to have such knowledgeable people running this rescue..... So kudos to Cindy and her happy volunteers you all are doing a fantastic job...
Central Virginia Horse rescue is a wonderful place for me to take my 4hers to learn about what's involved in rescuing horses, donks, ponies, mules, and mini's. Cindy Smith is the epitome of what it takes to run a rescue with order and conviction. She is very dedicated to her charges and has some of the nicest volunteers who are actually there to help and learn. CVHR is efficiently run and everyone is kept posted on what's happening at all times. My 4 Hers LOVE to go over and are constantly bugging me on when we are going back. It is an awesome facility and we feel welcomed every time we visit :)
I first heard of CVHR about 3 years ago when it was just getting going well. On my first visit, I knew it was going to be special. At the time, I was in driving distance and could volunteer. Since then I have moved too far away to be there in person, but based on my personal experience, I have total confidence that my donations will be well used and continue to send what I can regularly and for special causes. Cindy keeps us all very well informed about what is happening, progress, set backs, successes and losses. It is wonderful to watch the volunteer base and donor list continue to grow. I can't say enough about the wonderful work being done for equines AND for people. Many of the rescued horses have become companions and best friends for people with special needs.
It was a pleasure when I could volunteer in person, but now I am miles away.. The founder, Cindy Smith, keeps me informed with news letters and personal answers when I have a question. The open way of communicating helps me feel secure that my dollars are well used. I have personally met the board members and they are honest and honorable to the maximum degree. If you want to help horses in jeapordy be the best that they can be.. Your money will be well used here.
I have not had the opportunity yet to visit the actual locations but have been following this group for a littl over a year and have seen the multitude of horses loves they have impacted. They are definitely a asset to the communtiy and I would advocate for them at a moments notice. I am also extremely excited about their Courtland location as its much closer to home and I hope to be able to assist with their efforts in our communtiy. Awesome people doing awesome work.
I became aware of Central Virginia Horse Rescue when I was working as an equine specialist at our local animal shelter. Because our mares were not in danger, CVHR was jot able to take them. Due to an unusual course of events, one mare eventually ended up at CVHR in 2013. I began my relationship with this organization at that time and have been absolutely blown away at all they are able to achieve whilst working on a shoe-string budget. Gelding programs, training programs, general medical care, hoof trimmings, and floating teeth, not to mention emergency medical events...all funded by donations of the many, many people who support the amazing work these people do.
I will continue to support CVHR long after the mare is placed because I truly believe CVHR is a remarkable organization, and its leadership and farsightedness cannot be compared to any other equine rescue that I have experienced.
Central Virginia Horse Rescue is one of a handful of rescues that I trust implicitly and support wholeheartedly. I am totally impressed with how well they take care of the horses in their care, take in and network those in need, and find the right home for every horse they adopt out. CVHR rocks!
Central VA Horse Rescue does rescue right. They take in horses that others might not want, but they don't take in more than they can handle. For the ones they cannot take, they network to find them good homes. They are GFAS certified, they are transparent and trustworthy. I'm never afraid to donate to this rescue. Founder Cindy Smith is my hero.
I adopted my mare from CVHR in Oct,2011 and have never regretted it. Cindy and the volunteers do such amazing work with equines that have had their trust and hearts broken. When I am ready, I will certainly go to CVHR for another rescued horse. No doubts, no reservations....CVHR is a leader among rescues and sets high standards for others to follow.
I began looking for a horse about 2 years ago after coming out of "horsey" remission:) Wasn't really sure what I was looking for, but I did find CVHR:) And there she was...a tall, lanky, black, a bit bossy, and a bit of a diva. Cindy Smith met with me when I went to visit Sassy and had all the info on her. Very knowledgeable and friendly, Cindy immediatly won my heart (right after Sassy). I so admire what Cindy and CVHR stands for....integrity,love,sharing their knowledge and the most important caring for these beautiful equine! It has to be so difficult doing and seeing what they do, but Cindy and her group do it everyday....many times a day. I am now a very happy girl with my Sassy. She will be with me for life. I owe it all to CVHR and there is no way for me to pay them back for bringing me such joy.
Thanks to CVHR, many neglected or abandoned horses have had a second chance. I am grateful for their hard work and dedication to helping horses.
CVHR has a high level of compassion for the animals in their care, What sets them apart from so many other rescues, in my mind, is that they also have a sense of responsibility that keeps them from getting in over their heads in terms of taking on more animals than they can provide for. They also encourage eligible animals to move on to permanent private homes thus allowing room to take in more animals in need
Central VA Horse Rescue is the best! They possess priceless knowledge that they are willing to share with the horse community as well as rescuing horses. Through this vast use of knowledge, many horses have been brought back to health and been able to have wonderful homes. Thank you, CVHR, for all you do for the equines and the community. Keep up the great work!!
Only one word comes to mind when I think of Central Virginia Horse Rescue...fantastic. Cindy Smith goes to all lengths to be sure each of the animals' individual needs are met in an extremely caring way and she never gives up on the ones in her care. She tirelessly gives of herself to have this rescue be the best! Not only does she care for the rescues, but she also shares openly with the public as to the status of each rescue. There really are no words to describe what a pleasure it is to interact with Cindy and the rescue.
They do their best, from the heart..they love the horses and take the best care of them..and most of all they rescue them from a horrendous fate..God Bless them!!
I rescued a beautiful Standardbred Gelding, working with Central Virginia Horse Rescue is a pleasure. I have two rescues, and believe that these dedicated horse lovers that save and rehab these horses into healthy beautiful rideable animals is a true calling that very few of us can truly accomplish. The sacrifices made by rescues that really go un-noticed by the general public never ceases to amaze me.

Of the many horse rescue organizations I am familiar with, CVHR is one of the very best. Their ACTIVE dedication, rehabilitation and successful adoptions are a testimony to their professional and sincere efforts. I recommend them to anyone looking for a horse, and as a worthy donation recipient.
Cindy does an amazing job. My husband found information about the rescue a year ago. And with Cindy's help at 41 I was a very proud first time mom two three beautiful horses. I have had ups and downs but anytime I have needed her help she was there. All you need to do is go by for a visit and see. It's amazing to see the work and the progress and the love in all the animals for this one person who has given so very much for them. Thank you CVHR and thank you Cindy!!!!
We adopted 2 ponies from CVHR. They came to CVHR starved and had never been handled. By the time we adopted them they were happy and healthy and very well behaved. Cindy does an amazing job with the horses she rescues!
I came in contact with CVHR through my own research about horse rescues. I live many states away from CVHR but I stay in touch via face book, newsletters and their website. Cindy Smith spends her life caring for and helping as many horses as she can. CVHR is nonprofit and they do as much as possible on an extremely small budget. Although I wish I was able to volunteer and get to work at CVHR I am unable due to the distance. I help with donations when I can but always wish I could do more because I value the work they do daily to improve the lives of horses. Cindy is always in contact with her supporters and is honest and up front keeping everybody informed on CVHR happenings. I am amazed time and time again over what they do and how they help the most desperate of horses. The world is a much better place because of what Cindy and her volunteers do at CVHR!!
I meet CVHR and Cindy via Facebook while I was researching horse rescues. Her compassion, concern and true love for the horses and animals is extremely apparent. She is upfront and honest with goings on at CVHR and keeps everyone updated with frequent communication. I donate when I can and no matter the dollar amount Cindy is grateful. I wish I lived closer to CVHR so that I would be able to lend a helping hand directly to the rescue. I will continue to support CVHR because the work they do is so very important. Time and time again CVHR does amazing positive things in the lives of the animals she rescues! The humans that adopt her animals are just as lucky! She provides a win-win situation for the animals and the animals new family!
I am your average horse owner and love to follow CVHR on the wonderful rescue and rehabilitating work they do. Thank God there is a place like this for horses. The people seem so dedicated and willing to help even if it's not a horse on their farm. I have donated to their online auction and love to read up on the latest news at the farm. I hope they are around for many, many more years.
As a horse person and animal lover, I look for organizations that help animals because they can not help themselves. I have been following Central Virginia Horse Rescue for quite awhile. The work that CVHR does is wonderful. They take neglected, abused and abandonded horses and rehibitate, train and rehome them. Cindy and her crew of volunteers spend countless hours caring for the animals at CVHR.
Often rescues are so overwhelmed that they will just send animals out to whom ever shows an interest. NOT CVHR, there is a reference check and the horse and potential adopter must "gel".
Whenever I hear of someone looking for a horse, I suggest checking with CVHR.
As a person with many years of horse experience, I would say that CVHR is one of the best around.
I have been following Central VA Horse Rescue on Facebook as a resident of Virginia and rider/horse lover. They do an amazing job of updating the public with their horse news and you can tell the management has their heart in the right place. This is the rescue I would trust if I was ever adopting a rescue horse. They also seem to be a very transparent organization, a quality I think is lacking from a lot of non profits.
