Mission: Identifying & treating genetic diseases in the Plain and English Populations
Target demographics: children and adults with genetic disease from the Plain and English Communities of central and western Pennsylvania
Programs: The Central Pennsylvania Clinic (CPAC), a new clinic to care for children and adults with genetic diseases, has made good progress with the new clinic. From plain community donations, they met the goal of raising $400,000 for the Central Pennsylvania Clinic start-up fund and received a matching $400,000 fund contribution from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHOP). Patient care and an important natural history study of pyruvate kinase deficiency is taking place in the small leased office at 4527 East Main Street in Belleville, PA. There are 53 participants in a natural history study relating to this disease. This is about 50% of the worldwide participants. The clinic is in the process of building a medical staff as well as their new building. Needs assessments have determined that there is a continuing need for treatment and prevention of genetic diseases in the area. During 2015, a 6 acre tract of land, the future site of a new building was donated to the clinic. The new clinic has positive community support. The outlook for the Central Pennsylvania Clinic is optimistic and hopeful. The clinic will perform a key role in the future treatment, education, research, and awareness of genetic diseases.
