Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Civil Rights, Civil Rights, Social Action & Advocacy, Law & Jurisprudence

Mission: The Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR) works to promote social justice through human rights. In a world where poverty and inequality deprive entire communities of dignity, justice and sometimes life, we seek to uphold the universal right of every human being to education, food and water, health, housing, work and social security, and other economic, social and cultural rights essential to human dignity.

Results: CESR has made great progress in promoting social justice through human rights. Through issue papers and policy briefings, CESR has worked to expose the human rights violations that occur through unfair tax systems, such as austerity. There is evidence in certain contexts that the tide against austerity is turning and that human rights arguments and mechanisms are increasingly being invoked, in judicial and nonjudicial initiatives, to bring about this change. CESR has also played a key role in ensuring that human rights will be a central focus in the post-2015 development agenda. From submitting proposal and statements, to hosting forums, to publishing reports, CESR's work with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has directly influenced key actors and decision makers in the process, from member states to UN agencies, and have been enthusiastically taken up by other human rights, development, and social justice advocates, as well as in the media. CESR has also contributed greatly in the areas of rights monitoring and accountability. We have created innovative monitoring tools and formed working groups with other NGOs and National Human Rights Institutes (NHRIs), to ensure that human rights standards are upheld, and those who violate these standards are held accountable.
