I started volunteering at CARE STL in 2024. It’s incredible to see what they do with the limited resources they have. The amount of love they give animals is truly astounding. I look forward to the days I get to go and walk the dogs that deserve loving homes. If you can - foster & adopt from CARE. They are the best!
I do not recommend this “rescue.” They put down my foster dog while I was on my honeymoon despite me begging them not to. They have a history of putting down dogs without giving volunteers a chance to save them. They are not the No Kill shelter they claim to be. I won’t be giving them another penny or any of my volunteering time.
Do not recommend adopting from CARE STL, especially if you live outside St. Louis City.
Despite the adoption contract you sign saying you promise to return to dog to them if you're unable to keep for any reason, they won't accept them back, stating their contract with St. Louis prohibits them them from taking surrenders from non-city residents. That may be the case, but that's not how contracts work....CARE's contract with St. Louis has no bearing on their contract with me.
After lying to me about the dog's history with other animals, refused to take him back after he turned out to be seriously dog-aggressive and broke the front door to get out and attack a random dog being walked past our house. When I tried to return him, a volunteer confirmed a history of attacks at the shelter as soon as we were away from the hearing of CARE employees.
When I said I'd just leave the dog with him, they threatened to file animal abandonment charges with the police. Eventually had to surrender him to the Humane Society to be put down, as no one else would take him with a history of dog attacks.
DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE THEY ARE GIVING AWAY SICK ANIMALS , IS VERY RUDE AND IGNORANT WHEN CONFRONTED. IF I COULD PUT NO STARS I WOULD. I HAVE HAD THE DOG FOR 24 HOURS AND NOTICED THE DOG GOT PARVOVIRUS. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! NOT TO MENTION THE DOG I WAS GIVEN (BC THEY DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO PICK MYSELF) IS THROWING UP BLOOD... WHICH WHAT THEY TIRED TO BLAME ON ME... YEA I WENT OFF!!!!
Volunteering at CARE STL has changed my life. They are incredibly dedicated to their mission and always looking for ways to improve. I appreciate how receptive they are of volunteer feedback and suggestions and how they always keep their goal of saving animals at the forefront of every project. They are the true definition of a nonprofit- everyone on staff makes sacrifices to get these pets the love and care they deserve and no one expects anything in return. I am so inspired by the community and because of CARE I will now be involved in animal welfare and legislature for the rest of my life. Catch me running for office in 2024.
CARE Stl helped withthe adoption of our boy Gromit almost 2 years ago. They were helpful with his extra needs and they were open and forthcoming about expectations. They still check in with me time to time to see how he his doing as well! We are SO thankful for CARE Stl even existing, as Gromit had to be with the shelter for over a year before we met him. Thanks for everything they do and even more thanks to their volunteers!
We have had the absolute BEST experience with CARE STL. Almost 2 years ago we saw their plea for fostering a bonded pair of pups. Knowing how hard it is to find someone to foster (or adopt) a pair, we decided to step up and give fostering a try. The staff made it so easy to foster. Not only did they provide us with all the physical things we needed to foster them (things like food, crates, toys, and dog beds) they provided us with endless emotional and educational support as well. If we had a problem with one of our fosters, CARE was just a quick e-mail away. If we wanted more exposure for our pups they would feature them online, and we were always welcome to join in any of the adoption events. Since fostering the first pair was so easy, we decided to continue to foster dogs for CARE when we can. Each time the shelter staff has been amazing at pairing us with a dog that fits our home and lifestyle. We are now on our 14th dog, and CARE continues to support us as fosters in all the most important ways. (And they're never "judgy" when we tell them we have to take a break from fostering.) Honestly, I can't imagine my life without fostering dogs for CARE.
When we moved into our new home we promised our son we could get a dog. After scrolling through all the pictures we came across Scooby (aka. Faiz). We met him and instantly fell in love! Fast forward a year later and we got him a sister, Kinlee (aka Aurelia). They're both the most loving and amazing dogs we've ever had. CARE STL made both adoptions so easy. They offer so many helpful programs you can utilize and most importantly you can tell how much the staff and volunteers absolutely LOVE all these animals. I recommend this organization to everyone who is looking for a new fur baby.
I have fostered through CARE and every effort was made to make sure I had the right fit for my home. My multiple questions are answered in a very timely manner. When I went on a break from fostering, there was no pressure or guilt, which I appreciate.
The folks who work and volunteer are amazing. Simply amazing. Plus, I’ve made some pretty good two-legged friends in the process!
My foster failed after 7th cat I fostered.
I never thought I could be one of cat lady.
I am always dog lady but decided to switch to foster cat from dog thanks to CARE.
CARE always disclosed all information for CATS and DOGS as well as connecting me previous foster if available so I feel comfortable being prepared for all fosters needs in advanced.
There is amazing system temp foster or weekend only foster too!
We adopted our Buddy (Dragoon) from CARE STL Dec 2022. He is the best dog ever. CARE STL does so much for the strays of St Louis. Their hard work and dedication to the animals is by far superb! 5* for a amazing shelter. We will definitely adopt from them again if we are ready to expand our fur family.
CARE does exactly what its name suggests, they care. They care deeply about the animals that come through their door. So many animals have been saved because of this place. I have been a foster with CARE for a couple of years now and I will never stop. They fight day and night to ensure animals are cared for, walked, and adopted.
This rescue works very hard to maintain a no kill status, its workers are friendly, caring, and very dedicated. They need more resources, volunteers, fosters, and money to help support them and their cause. They are faced with a very challenging situation of mostly having large dogs due to being in the inner city.
We adopted our girl, Kira, from CARE STL a little over a year ago, and she is such a wonderful addition to our family. The work CARE does to make sure animals that come to them get out of the shelter and stay out is amazing. The training they put Kira through made her an even easier choice, having her already house broken, crate trained, and loose-leash trained. They do everything they can to give stray animals in St. Louis the best chance.
I’ve never before experienced a place like CareSTL, the people have the biggest hearts in the world and dedicate their lives to Care!
CARE STL is working to make St. Louis a positive and rewarding place for animals! I am happy to support their cause.
I have fostered 12 dogs from CARE STL and have always felt supported by the staff and other volunteers with any questions or training tips. The staff and volunteers at CARE STL care so much about the well being of the animals and it shows!

I have fostered and volunteered at Care STL for over 6 months and have loved my experiences. I have 2 dogs so fostering is all about if a dog will get along with my dogs and every time the staff takes time to find a foster who will be a perfect fit for my house. They find such good fits I’ve almost adopted all of them! I always will value how much the staff genuinely cares and gets to know each animal that is in their care.
I started volunteering at CARE 2 years ago and have loved watching it grow and expand services. CARE is genuinely committed to each dog, adopter, and volunteer and will do whatever it takes to find the right fit for their dogs.
This is well hidden gem in St. Louis. I'm an almost lifelong resident of St. Louis and I had never heard of CARE STL until I had a chance encounter at Queeny Park. They do such a good job with these animals. The adoption process was so smooth and easy. I love my dog, but we got off to a rocky start because I really didn't know how to train a dog that wasn't a puppy. The staff at CARE STL were so quick with responses to my emails, they directed me to a great online training resource, Good Pup and gave me a code to use for a scholarship. After I got the 6 basics of dog training down I was having problems with reactivity while we were on dog walks and I turned to the trainers for help and, once again, they were fabulous. They are a fantastic place, the pets are well cared for, the staff is responsive and they provide great support after the adoption.
This is the best place to help a rescue pet. I saw Cali aka Calypso on line, made an appointment and visited her a couple of times and the staff worked with to make sure she was a perfect match for our family! We adopted on May 12 and I don’t know what we would do without her! Check it out! Please. There are plenty of friendly faces, that can help you make the best decision for everyone!!!!
I am so grateful to C.A.R.E and was blessed with my girl Daisy fka Eden. I went on June 19, 2022 (Father's Day) to see what new friend I might connect with. Daisy was in the office as she was brought back in by her foster family. She hadn't been taken to the kennels with the other residents. Everyone was so kind and understanding to what I was looking for. I never once felt pressured to adopt and they answered all of my questions and made the process so easy. I simply fell in love with my girl that day and love her personality. So thank you C.A.R.E. for introducing me to Daisy.
I volunteer at Carestl once a week if I'm lucky! Since the first day I've had positive interactions with all the staff and volunteers I've worked alongside. Staff values my ideas and encourages me to try different ways of helping shy and fearful cats come out of their shell. They also appreciate photos I take while I'm there. I feel useful and a valued member of the team!
I have fostered, (briefly) volunteered, and foster failed for CARE, and I love how the whole organization is one big family! Even though I haven't really met anybody in person since I started fostering (and then adopted) a dog with separation-related issues, I feel like I know everybody and they know me and they are always willing to help out.
I love CARE because even though they’re not the most known shelter or the most helped shelter in STL they take on the most as the city’s open intake. They cannot say no to a admission but honestly even if they could I’m not sure they would because it’s run by the most dedicated staff and volunteers who make it work. There are really tough days and days where your heart is heavy by the numerous amounts of dogs but at the end of the day you see the love everyone has for these animals and know there is good in the world when sometimes you doubt it.
We started fostering this past July. Our first foster dog was adopted and now we are fostering another. We love that the group is a non-profit no kill shelter and has so many good programs for the community, such as low cost vaccinations and spaying and neutering. They even assist owners with food and supplies in times of financial trouble. They have a large amount of hard working and very dedicated volunteers that care for the homeless and often damaged animals. I can’t say Anouilh good things about them. And we encourage you to foster! CARE-STL provides all the supplies you need.
I foster a dog. This rescue has been very helpful and quick to respond to my concerns. I met with trainers to brush up on my skills to help my foster become more adoptable, and we are making progress. The vet tech has been great, too.
Just over two and a half years ago I stopped in at CARE STL to drop off some donations. They sent me home with my first foster that very day!
I have volunteered for and supported many rescues over the years and I can honestly say that this particular group has really impressed me. The staff and volunteers are so dedicated to the animals in their care and do everything within their power to make sure that each animal has its best chance at finding a loving forever home. The people are friendly and helpful and so passionate about the work they do every day.
They have taken a high euthanasia rate city pound and transformed it into a place of hope and second chances. I am proud to support them and grateful to be among such a compassionate and hard working "family" of staff and volunteers.
Everyone is so dedicated to caring for these animals and doing what is right. They put the animals first each and every day and truly go above and beyond. I can’t say enough good things about the staff and volunteers.
CARE STL is a really wonderful place - it feels like family there among the staff and volunteers. We are all there to help the animals that come to us and we are all very proud to play a part in the success of the only open intake no kill shelter in the city of St. Louis. We have fostered for them and adopted from them as well.
This organization is the worst organization I have ever seen our English bulldog was taking their somehow no documentation on how she got there or who she came from but her microchip was red and we were notified upon returning into town immediately contacted the organization they have done nothing but been rude disruptive and an endangered our dogs life we have contacted the St Louis city police who haven't competed us to the organization and are bewildered by this organization's actions every single piece of documentation they have asked for we have provided our dog is a rare breed English bulldog and is a breeder she is not meant to be spayed or neutered that is only for stray dogs it seems as if this dog has been given to someone and they will not allow us to have our dog back everyday they come up with new situations that we have to jump through the St Louis city ordinance says nothing about pets anything that's to be learned is about stray dogs homeless dogs our dog has a happy home we would like our dog return to her happy home so the dog may not have to do any more stress
St Louis is truly lucky to have CARE . They have drastically improved the lives of SO MANY homeless and needy animals since their creation. Thank you
We adopted our pup from CARE in December 2020. We saw Kya’s profile, put in an application, and within a day we got a screening call. We connected with the foster mom that eve and scheduled a meet and greet. CARE made the process so easy. We love that our pup was in a foster home, so the foster mom was able to give us real insight on how she was with other dogs, where she was doing well and where she would need more training, etc. The adoption process was easy, and we brought her home the same day we met her. Thanks, CARE!
I adopted my boxer Eleanor from Care Stl! I knew as soon as I saw her I had to have her! She fits perfectly into our family! She has definitely made our life more enjoyable! Care goes above and beyond to match you with the perfect pet! You can see everyone there is dedicated to what they do! They also love seeing updates on all the pets they adopt out which is pretty great!
CARE STL did an amazing job of matching up our family with our perfect dog, Astrid. CARE STL saved Astrid from a dangerous life as a homeless dog and they gave her wonderful medical care and a safe shelter. The adoption process was fun and easy, and Astrid is the most affectionate pet we have ever had. We are so grateful to CARE STL!
We had to say goodbye to our 10 year old Great Dane in June of 2020. We took some time to grieve and be ready for a new dog. In March of 2021 we started looking. We actually went to CareSTL interested in another dog. While that dog wasn’t right for us, we were introduced to our dog Stanley(called Shiesty at Care). We fell in love! We are very grateful to CareSTL not only for helping us find our friend, but also for the support after. The classes they offer for people to learn how to best navigate the difficulties sometimes experienced with rescuing a shelter dog - are invaluable! The caring community of adopters and fosters is very useful as well.
I adopted these angels in November 2020. CARESTL was wonderful! They were vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed and neutered. The people here are fantastic! Highly recommend!
This is Alex! Her owner passed away and no one in that person’s family stepped up to take in Alex. Alex was completely distraught losing the only life she knew. I fostered her for a few months and here true colors started to shine. I knew I couldn’t make her have to redo this process again (not to mention I fell in love with her) so I officially made her part of the pack. She’s sweet, affectionate, and loves you unconditionally. I’m so glad CARE brought us together.
I walked into CARE on a whim and sat down for a whole long convo with a wonderful staff person. My fur baby had been at CARE over a year, was not doing well around other dogs and needed a hero. He was given away by his previous owner. The staff talked me through every single thing with Papas even though it was a busy day for them. I adopted him about a week later and its been lovely.
We fostered Poohui from Care STL in March of 2020 and ended up adopting her. The process of filling out paperwork was easy and adoption fees were actually waved due to COVID and her age. Care STL and their online community of families has been GREAT! Poohui has been the best edition to our family ever. She is a 9 year old pitbull who came from a dog hoarding situation. She was a breeding dog too. She has scars from fights that I will never know about. However, at our house, she is the sweetest most loving soul who just wants to please & play. She snores & snorts so much. She makes me smile everyday.
Not only have I adopted 2 pets from this shelter, I also have volunteered for over 4 years. Words cannot describe this establishment and it’s founder, Weng!!
They LOVE all animals and give everything they can to help any animal in need. Fostered Mal for a week before she became a foster fail. A year later Mocha formerly known as Mal is still an amazing and loving dog. Super nice staff and walks you through every step of the process. Always in need of fosters. It’s not a hard thing to do and the animals need a stress free environment to get out of the kennels.
I met my soul dog Pig Pen there. Great customer service. Very knowledgeable about the right animal for you. Recently started fostering a dog I’m probably going to adopt. Best place I’ve been that shows they all love the animals.
I discovered CARE when I was looking for volunteer opportunities at shelters after my own cat passed away. I was devastated and wanting to honor her by helping other rescue cats. I started volunteering and was blown away by how organized and passionate folks at CARE were. It helped me work through the grief of my recent loss. I ended up taking home one of their cats, Bali, as a short term foster, but she was such a perfect fit for my home that we kept her. Since then, I've been fostering kittens for CARE and continuing to volunteer at the shelter.
I would need pages to write all the good CARE is doing, but to sum it up in a paragraph, CARE is the real deal. I've been volunteering at rescues for over 10 yrs and I have seen a lot. CARE really does have the dogs as number one priority. To me the most important thing is they work hard to get the dogs adopted. They don't give up on any dog and ware house them, they find the right person and get the dogs a home. They don't label dogs for a single mistake in their life, but give them second chances. They do all kinds of programs for the community, Spay and Neuter, microchipping, helping people keep pets in different programs. CARE has taken in dogs for people who can't pay the medical bills and CARE pays it. And aside from that, they are wonderful to us volunteers, they treat us as equals and include us in things. I also have to add, Weng is an amazing person, no one could do a better job than she is doing. I am grateful she has taken this on, and so are the dogs!
We adopted our wonderful dog Wilbur from CARE STL in 2019. The staff and volunteers are amazing -compassionate to the animals in their care and passionate about animal rescue. We cannot thank them enough for loving our boy before he came to us.
I started volunteering at CARE Stl just over a year ago, when the pandemic hit and I had some extra time, and never looked back. As a medical student who spends a lot of time in the hospital and who doesn't have a lot of free time, I've made CARE a priority in my life because of how genuinely they believe in their mission. CARE treats their animals and their volunteers like family. They go above and beyond to keep their animals with families, offering free training classes for volunteers and even adopters to learn how to work with challenging animals and even offering one-on-one classes for adopters. Their CHEW program pairs volunteers with dogs that need more time and training. They truly treat each animal as an individual and clearly care immensely about both animals and volunteers. They are also a force for good in the community, boarding animals whose humans are temporarily hospitalized or evicted until they can be reunited and offering low-cost microchip and vaccination clinics. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon CARE.
CARE STL is a very supportive and caring organization. I’ve been volunteering there for almost 2 years as a dog walker/trainer and a puppy foster. CARE STL has facilitated adding programs to support adopters, fosters and volunteers. Help and support is there for anyone that needs it. The goal is to get dogs and cats adopted into forever homes and to offer assistance when needed.
CARE STL has brought positive change for the animals and residents of St Louis City.
I have never met a stranger. I make friends in line at the grocery store. So when a friend asked me to help with an event at CareSTL I said sure. I loved the mission - partnering with St. Louis City Animal Control to give shelter dogs the best life and a real chance at adoption - embracing a no-kill philosophy. Then I met the people and I was hooked. The staff and volunteers bend over backwards to help these animals. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, heck even sheep! I had to do what I can - talk to people - so I became an event coordinator so I can tell as many people as possible to adopt, donate, foster and/or volunteer.
I adopted my kitty from CARE STL in 2019. The staff was noticeably warm & caring - in fact, you can *feel* the love and dedication from the staff and volunteers from the instant you walk through the door. They were so impressive, I'm now a volunteer. Thank you CARE STL for ALL the GOOD you put into this world.
The staff and volunteers really care about all the animals, fosters, and adopters well being. At the shelter, the animals are taken care of from vet visits to making sure all the animals get some love and training. Staff is great at matching fosters and adopters with animals and communication is wonderful. There are volunteers who are always willing to support adopters in caring for their new family member with tips and training support. Everyone does a great job of communicating and really learning each animals personality. I’m glad I get to spend time caring for the animals on my own time!
This non for profit is a wonderful organization that wholeheartedly goes above and beyond to care for Saint Louis city stray dogs and cats. The staff is limited and work endlessly to make sure volunteers and animals are treated with respect and kindness. Care STL gets animals of all kinds coming in and they make sure all are treated well, fed, warm and safe. The dedicated staff keep St Louis city no- kill!!
