Mission: From our inception in 1954, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences has maintained an unwavering commitment to a single mission: To advance knowledge in the social and behavioral sciences.
Programs: 1. The cornerstone of the Center is our Residential Fellows program. The basic elements of this program include year-long residential fellowships for up to 48 invited scholars who are free to work on whatever scholarly projects they think important. 2. Besides supporting the work of individual scholars, CASBS has a long and distinguished history of organizing year-long special projects for work on cutting-edge topics. Some of the most influential work to come out of the Center has been produced by these groups. 3. We also organize summer institutes which are intensive 5- or 6-week seminars on compelling interdisciplinary topics. 4. With sufficient funding support, we plan to replace one-year special projects with multi-year extended seminars. These would feature periodic meetings over one to two years for a group of eight to ten scholars, leading to a residential year at the Center for a subset of the group, followed by a year of dissemination activities designed to distribute new knowledge to relevant scholarly and general audiences.
