Causes: Digestive Diseases & Disorders, Health, Specifically Named Diseases Research
Mission: The mission of the foundation is to promote fundamental, clinical, and product-oriented research into Celiac Sprue, a lifelong hereditary disease resulting from intolerance to gluten. Notwithstanding its seriousness and wide prevalence (~1:200 individuals suffer from the disease), the disease is heavily under-diagnosed and has been largely neglected by the scientific and pharmaceutical community.
Programs: The primary goal of the Celiac Sprue Research Foundation is to translate emerging knowledge about Celiac Sprue pathogenesis into a comprehensive plan for developing a therapeutic alternative to a gluten-free diet. Once the Foundation?s initial drug development strategy has been launched, it will use available resources to promote basic research that might lead to fundamentally new insights into the disease, and to improve technologies for detecting new patients of this seriously under-diagnosed disease.
